The book I needed in high school

It happens to most students at some point during their academic careers. For some reason, nothing just seems to stick. Perhaps it's dealing with a particular subject matter. Perhaps it's with nearly every subject, but putting in the time studying yields little results. It may not be the quantity of studying but the quality of studying. In the book "101 Ways to Make Studying Easier and Faster for High School Students" author Janet Engle, offers a number of practical tips to help students use their study time more effectively.
While most general study tips guides have a number of general rules that apply to studying subject matters in general, Engle goes much further than those traditional approaches. She offers study tips unique to every major subject. This can be crucially important to students who find themselves struggling in specific subject matters.
In the foreign language chapter for example, Engle suggests students struggling to learn grammatical concepts such as conjugations not rely on conjugation lists and other such tools. Rather, she suggests it may be more effective to write a sentence using each verb form. This will allow the student to think of the verb in its natural setting.
One of the tips in the math section encourages students to show their own work after every problem. Engle notes this is critical both for the student and the teacher. If a student is having trouble understanding a concept, an instructor is better able to help the student if each step used to arrive at the final answer is chronicled. Studying does not help if errors are not able to be rectified.
In addition to the specific tips in each subject matter, Engle gives reasons why students need to study certain subjects and what the long-term benefits and uses are. In doing this, Engle shows a good understanding of one of the biggest study problems high school students - motivation. If students don't see a practical application for their efforts, they will be less likely to give 100 percent. Engle seeks to answer the argument, "I'm never going to use this stuff!" before it is ever offered.
In addition to the tips that cover most major subjects, there are other attractive qualities to Engle's book as well. She never talks down to students, but always try to encourage, even when correcting bad habits. "Do not let a temporary situation become a permanent excuse for not reaching your goals," she exhorts. No detail is overlooked in the production quality of the book as well. The college-type font at the beginning of each chapter and with each subhead, no doubt, will serve to remind many high school students what the ultimate goal is.
While the title of the book suggests there are 101 tips, Engle actually provides many more than that. Many are listed as "sub-tips" to the main points. In some ways, the title of Engle's work actually sells the book short. Students, or parents, who purchase this book are getting way more than their money's worth. They may be getting an entire future.

Great Book

I remember the difficulty I had studying as a high school student and now that I am a parent I worry about children's experiences. 101 Ways To Make Studying Easier and Faster for High School Students was able to alleviate many of those fears with the easy to follow instructions and in-depth reports about study habits and memorization. I can guarantee my incoming freshman will go to school already having read this book.
Science and mathematics can be a difficult for may students to master, but the author helps people get figure out their own pace and skills and to work with them instead of against them. She also delves into the psychology of studying and how a student perceives the subject and his abilities can have a major impact on how he learns.
The book delves extensively into the individual subjects and how to best approach them. She also examines subjects outside of the main curriculum including music and drama. I have read few books on studying that have gone beyond the reading, writing and arithmetic. For a change, 101 Ways To Make Studying Easier and Faster for High School Students teaches is about the student and not standardized test scores. I give it four stars.

Fabulous How To Guide for High School Students Who Struggle With Study Skills

101 Ways To Make Studying Easier and Faster for High School Students is an excellent overall "how-to" study guide for high school students. Parents should pick up a copy for their soon-to-be freshmen or students struggling with poor grades. Her book could also cross over to college students.
The author presents her information in an easy-to-read format. She delves into unique study approaches such as how to memorize foreign language vocabulary and how to use mnemonic devices to learn difficult science concepts. Her chapters about language arts and how to write term paper/essays were very informative.
I also liked how she incorporated study tips for creative/artistic subjects such as music and drama. This book is more than just a study guide: the author incorporates tips about organization, project/time management, and how to approach learning with a positive attitude. This book makes a great guide for high school students who want to tackle a new approach to studying. I rate this book a five out of five stars.
