Deeply nihilistic yet full of yearning, tender yet savagely self-mocking, Laforgue has a unique voice and vision that nonetheless mark him out as one of the founding fathers of modernism. Like Charles Baudelaire before him, he was determined to face up to the ugly and decadent as well as the conventionally poetic aspects of himself and the world about him. In a career that rivals Arthur Rimbaud's for its tragically brief, accelerated development, he pioneered the use of coarse colloquialism, startling rhymes, and astonishing invented words. His greatest achievement, the posthumous Derniers Vers (1890), was the first complete French volume of free verse. Partly influenced by his translation of Walt Whitman -- the first in the French language -- Derniers Vets is brilliantly effective in capturing the truth of fleeting impressions and inner sensations. It is also, writes Graham Dunstan Martin, "one of the musical masterpieces of literature." This bilingual edition features a generous selection of poems in the original French from Laforgue's Le Sanglot de la Terre, Les Complaintes, L'Imitation de Notre-Dame la Lune, Des Fleurs de Bonne Volonte, and Derniers Vers, with running prose translations at the bottom of each page.

Clowns, Moons, and Youth!
By Christopher Nelson
Jules Laforgue was a contemporary of Rimbaud, yet they never knew one another because just as Rimbaud had stopped writing poetry and was leaving for Abyssinia, Laforgue was arriving in Paris from South America (where he was born). There is some debate over who really wrote the first "free verse", as Rimbaud had already written his "Illuminations", however Laforgue was the first to actually have his vers libres published. And so, his influence on modern English poetry through Eliot, and Crane was established.
Where Rimbaud is "harsh", and "brusque", Laforgue is subtle and melancholy. The former is more the visionary, whereas Laforgue seems to me more the dreamer/imaginary. Either-way, Laforgue is wonderful to read, and a nice change of pace from Rimbaud. Even though he wrote more than Rimbaud, his life was shorter - he died of tuberculosis at 27! The translations in this Penguin edition by Graham Dunstin Martin are literal, and so the poetic affect is limited unless you are able to read a little of the French (printed right above the translations in more prominent print). For verse translations, I highly recommend William Jay Smith ("Selected Readings of Jules Laforgue", 1956.)
I have yet to read all of Laforgue's works (there are the "Moral Tales", and essays on "Berlin", art, and landscapes), but my overall impression of his five books of poems presented here is of seemingly schizophrenic conversations with the moon, clowns, and inanimate objects like cigarettes, pianos, and buildings. His imagery is incredible ("skeletons of wisteria", "stewpot, poor Earth!", "heart of gold stuffed with literary spices", "brain pickled in the alchohol of pride") and the French rhymes magnificently musical. Laforgue is playful, melancholy, and pessimistic using an attractive poetic style. Both Rimbaud and Laforgue are princes of modernity, following up on the Master, Baudelaire's dark revolution against and away from romanticsm. Laforgue captures fleeting sensations and moments more playfully than Rimbaud, I think, using more colloquial language than his peer, but Rimbaud is second to none for obscure visions and acerbic wit. All in all, Laforgue's poems will make you smile at times in their innocence and lunacy, but most importantly, they are a conversation with various muses (lunar, pierrot, the feminine, amor, etc.) which are inspiring, thought-provoking, and astonishing all at once.

Thrilling verse from the father of modern poetry.
By darragh o'donoghue
Jules LaForgue, for so long underrecognised in his own country, is now seen as the father of modern poetry, especially influential on the work of Eliot and Pound in terms of persona, language, reaction to modernity, and the violent incongruity of his metaphors and images.
This edition boasts excellent prose translations of the poems by Graham Dunstan Martin. These may be insufficient for the non-French speaker, but the problem with translations that try to catch the spirit of the original rather than the detail, such as Ron Padgett's translations of Blaise Cendrars, is that necessary omissions can lead to dilution and distortion. So, I suppose, this book is best recommended for those, like myself, who have a smidgeon of mediocre French, and can compare their own efforts against Martin's grammatically correct translations.
His introduction is refreshingly free of jargon, and with great simplicity, he details LaForgue's tragically early life, his intellectual precusors, his cultural milieu, his themes and his methods. LaForgue's poetic skill often has to transcend the essential banality of his philosophy, and Martin's discussion of LaForgue's pervasive irony seems to suggest that his work is often about nothing at all if every comment, even if it's 'ironic' is ironically cancelled out by irony (oh yes).
The first selection of which I've just read is largely juvenelia entitled 'The Grief Of the Earth'. Martin warns of the young LaForgue's vulnerablility to Hugo's influence, based on considerable rhetorical bombast, and these poems aren't free of railing against God, the weather, 'ordinary' people, the world, the Unconscious.
But even this early in his oeuvre, LaForgue shows remarkable brilliance. He uses conventional forms, such as the sonnet or lyric, but rends their frames with the exciting violence of his vocabulary, the unnerving juxtapositional clashes he achieves. His poems often start out as one thing, offering a certain set of emotions, which, through irony, and exagerration, become something totally different, more disturbing. The 'Lament of the Notre-Dame organist' is a case in point. The hero begins grieving movingly for his dying lover, but he gets so carried away by his grand sentiments, that he thinks her already dead, and savours the lashing he'll give to the Almighty, and the eternal doleful Bach fugues he'll play. A pitiable, Romantic, lover has become something much more modern and disturbing.
It's not all violence though. There is a lovely debate between a clown and Jesus over the paradox of free-will and God's omniscience; a strange lament by lonely Parisians for the superficial, but gay and alive, high society that has abandoned them during winter; a danse macabre by a grotesque infant whose mother calls him beyond the grave; and a mellow, despairing tribute to poetry, cigarettes and dreams as escapes from the living death that is our existence. I can't wait to try LaForgue's more mature work.

Startling juvenelia from the father of modernist poetry.
By darragh o'donoghue
Martin's introduction is so jargon-free that it almost feels unscholarly. However, he manages to essay economically LaForgue's biography, his times, ideas, personality, themes, development, method and their demonstration in his work. Sometimes this can be a little simplistic, at others a little confusing. For example, Martin discusses at great length LaForgue's irony. This is fair enough, it is an important weopon in any writer's arsenal, especially one so phlegmatically iconoclastic as LeForgue.
However, whenever Martin decides what LeForgue's theme is, or whenever he does something a little gauche, he negates with irony. If everything LeForgue says is ironical, even the irony, than he's not really saying anything, is he? Better is his analysis of LeForgue's immense influence on modern poetry, especially on Pound and Eliot. His sensibly chosen examples show how indebted Prufrock and Other Poems was to LaForgue, in the persona developed, the language used, and the startling, non-conventional effects of clashing images and metaphors.
I have just read LaForgue's first works, Le Sanglot De La Terre (the grief of the earth). This is essentially his juvenelia, and Martin warns of his indebtedness to Hugo, his youthful pomposity and arrogance. This may be true, but if you're used to timid English poetry, even adolescent stuff like this is astonishing. LaForgue is most famous for developing the first French free verse style, but in these poems he adopts conventional forms. However, these burst with such violence, his words are barely containable ravages at decorum, his daring is so wildly out of proportion that one cannot fail to be excited.
Some of these poems are extraordinary. In one a church organist laments his dying lover. So carried away is he with his sorrow that he dreams already of her death and the immense grieving he is going to offer. In another he extols the escapist pleasures of narcotics as an antidote to the living death that is life. There are wailings against God, the elements, fate, the Unconscious. One lovely poem frames a debate between Jesus and a clown over free will and God's omniscience, with the former fudging the matter.
But there are also quieter, more gently melancholic poems, such as the lament of the Parisian poor for the gay bright aristocracy, whose winter absence makes the city seem desolate, and yet whose transformative power is also a kind of death. These are so good I cannot wait to try LaForgue's more mature work.

"Mary Elizabeth Braddon knows much that ladies are not accustomed to know." —Henry James

From the Back Cover
Weathering critical scorn, Lady Audley's Secret (1862) quickly established Mary Elizabeth Braddon as the leading light of Victorian 'sensation' fiction, sharing the honour only with Wilkie Collins. Addictive, cunningly plotted and certainly sensational, Lady Audley's Secret draws on contemporary theories of insanity to probe mid-Victorian anxiety and the doubts that accompanied the rapid rise of consumer culture. What is the mystery surrounding Mary Elizabeth Braddon's artful and charming heroine? Lady Audley's secret is investigated by Robert Audley, aristocrat turned detective, in a novel that has lost none of its power to disturb and entertain.

About the Author
Mary E Braddon (1835-1915) began writing at the age of eight but it was not until she won an admirer as an actress that she could settle down to write serial fiction. She became a bestselling 'sensation' author and was read avidly by Tennyson, Dickens and Thackery. She wrote over eighty novels. A Victorian Bestselling Novel That Still Fascinates Us
By T.NAKAJIMA
The 1860s in England saw the boom of "sensation novels" which is best represented by the gripping thrillers "The Woman in White" and "The Moonstone," written by Wilkie Collins. Immediately after the success of the former one, Mary Elizabeth Braddon wrote "Lady Audley's Secret," which also became an instant bestseller, quickly making her a celebrity. But, in more than one sense, as you see later.
The story of Braddon's book is clearly inspired by Collins's "The Woman in White" (especially by Laura's story), but it is quite unfair to call "Lady Audley" a poor imitation. (And remember, Collins's story is also said to be based on a French book recording actual crime cases). Lady Audley takes a more defying view on the Victorians, roles of women in particular, and that's the real reason she was such a "sensation," and is again getting our attention now.
The story goes like this: Lucy, a governess without family, is loved by Sir Michael Audley, a rich landowner of Audley Court, Essex, and marries him to the chagrin of some people who look at her as an adventuress. No matter how people think, however, they are living happily.
In the meanwhile, George Talboys, after his long, hard days in Australia searching for goldmine, finally comes back to London, after many years, with money to make his wife happy. But when he encountered his old friend Robert Audley, nephew of Sir Michael, he accidentally knows that his beloved wife is no longer alive.
Those two seemingly unrelated events begin to get entangled after George's sudden missing. Robert starts his own investigation, as if beckoned by a fate, and he, collecting evidences, gradually comes to one inevitable conclusion.
And ... let me say this first; "Lady Audley" is an absorbing book, but absorbing not in the way a good detective story is. The "secret" in point is, one often mistakes, NOT the secret you can easily discover in the early stage of the plot. (You must wait to see the nature of Lady's secret at the end of the book, which is still controversial.) The story is melodramatic and sometimes predictable, but the real virtue of the book is the portrait of the strong-willed heroine, who dares to challenge the social codes of women in Victorian era.
The book is full of action that you might find in any potboilers, shocking for the comtemporary people, which includes: murder, arson, secret passage, blackmail, you name it. But the way Braddon handles them is always steady and well-controlled, and at some places they look unexpectedly modern, reading like a movie script, anticipating the cinematic treatment in the early 20th century (this had been made into films three times in silent-film days, and once on TV even in 2000) Her book has many flaws, surely, but should be never called dull.
Mary Elizabeth Braddon, when she was working on this book, was living with John Maxwell, ambitious publisher in debt, and she was the main provider of income. While living together (and John was still married to another woman in asylum, which makes an interesting parallel with George Eliot), she wrote with a frantic speed. Through 1861-62, when she wrote "Lady Audley's Secret," -- and she was also writing for cheaper periodicals under false name! -- Braddon confesses that she wrote the Third Book (the final third part) of the "Lady Audley" in a fortnight. Considering the fact, the book is incredibly tight, and infallibly engaging.

Hugely enjoyable
By A Customer
I read this for a Victorian literature class, and sandwiched as it was between the imposing density of Middlemarch and Dickens, it was a real holiday. "Lady Audley" was written for pure narrative pleasure, and it delivers big-time. I had no idea Victorian literature could be this tantalizing. It's really kind of trashy, falling into the sensational genre, but don't let that deter you - it'll keep you up at night AND provide the romantic bygone otherness of say, a Jane Austen novel. It's also an interesting window into Victorian femininity, undermining as it does the ideal of the passive angel in the house, and replacing her with a kind of femme fatale anti-heroine. (Everyone in my class enjoyed it, even the whingers who typically bemoan everything on the reading list.) A really good read.

A classic and delightful read for any century!
By A Customer
One of the most widely read murder mysteries of the 19th century is still a worthwhile adventure today. Mary E. Braddon delivers a thoughtful masterpiece of suspense. After craftily engaging her reader, Braddon gives one the illusion of knowledge. We begin to believe that we know and understand the "secret" and are simply waiting for the mystery to unfold. Yet beware! We are not as knowing as we think, the text is not as simple as it appears. Full of exciting twists and unnerving psychological profiles, _Lady Audley's Secret_ is a must-read thriller! As a birdseye view of Victorian England, it is superb. As a literary lesson in character development, it is unmatched. As an intriguing, can't-put-it-down plot, it is excellent. In a word, it is timeless

Change It Up: Transforming Ordinary Churches into Passionate Disciplemaking Communities, by Dale H. Edwardson

Change is the beginning of revolution. Change is the start of transformation. Without change, the end draws near. That's a fact of life. Businesses die everyday, simply because they won't change. We see it everywhere. And churches lie empty and dormant across this land for the very same reason. Enough change takes place over time that churches that were once full and vibrant and attractive now sit empty and cold. Or they remain open with a declining number of people, focused on God but irrelevant to man.

The purpose of this book is to challenge us and to show us how to aggressively change the things in our own church culture that will then allow us to influence and impact our surrounding communities. We want to be followers of Christ, bringing radical transformation to a world that's desperately lost. If the entire structure and programming of the church is focused on mobilizing disciples to go and bring their friends to Christ, then those friends will be coming to Christ, coming to church, growing into disciples and then going after their friends! This Biblical mindset needs to drive everything! Everything must change that's not moving us toward God's actual will for our churches.

If the entire structure and programming of the church has deteriorated into something that simply maintains itself, like an old folk's home, we will die! New life won't come with great new ideas, new programs or new structures. New life will rise out of a fresh awakening to an old, but ageless truth- go and make disciples who go! Get ready for thirteen chapters filled with loads of details about what church should really look like. Every chapter builds toward the final product- turning self-serving people into multiplying disciples, filled with the Spirit and focused on the Mission!

Self-Published For a Reason
By Dylan Valliere
Positively, let me say that Edwardson's heart for effective ministry, reaching lost people with the gospel of Jesus Christ, and God-honoring churches is evident. The author is clearly passionate about doing church well and not simply going through the motions or accepting mediocrity.

The book's main point is that we must revisit everything we do with fresh eyes, consider how it attracts or repels visitors and new comers, and then do anything and everything in our power to remove unnecessary barriers to such folks giving the real content of the church a fair shake. If something negotiable (externals, formats contra Christian doctrine and teaching) is repellant to non-Christians in your context, fix, tweak, ditch, or replace that negotiable.

No doubt, an open-minded reader can and will benefit from this book, the questions it raises, and the examples it provides. Dale Edwardson has something to say, something pastors would do well to hear and consider carefully.

Sadly, the book violates its own thesis: while calling readers to attend very carefully to external issues so that the message can get a fair hearing, the book spends little to no effort at being clear, concise, organized, and readable. I frequently had the sense that the author was just talking at the computer and hoping that with many words, the things he wanted to say would somehow get out and across. Each time I picked up the book to read the next portion, I'd think to myself, "surely it's not as bad as you remember. Maybe this portion will be better." It never was. Each time was an exercise in self-control to force my way through the material. The writing is so painfully in need of multiple rounds of revision and editing that it should never have gone to press. Without exaggeration, I can say that I have never picked up a book that was this poorly written.

The formatting was very distracting: every paragraph began with a topic sentence (which often, but not always gave a reasonable sense of what followed) and was formatted in bold text. Exclamations points were excessively used; it wasn't unusual to find 10, 12, or 15 exclamation points per page! Therefore, every page was full of bold text and exclamatory punctuation. The tone felt almost manic at points.

Outlines were used at times but in such a way as to create confusion rather than clarity. Indented subsections contained content that was formatted all the way to the margin; when you reached a new section, suddenly you were indented once more and had to go back to figure out what the current section was. Even something as simple as using the same font throughout is not always the case. There are occasional paragraphs printed in an entirely different font, falsely leading the reader to suspect a different type of content such as an inset quote or illustration.

The repetitiveness of the book was infuriating. Topics were raised, beaten to death, and explicitly concluded only to be revisited afresh literally a couple paragraphs later. The final page count is 444. This book should have been no longer than 100 to 150 pages. Properly edited, it probably would have fit in that range. Two hundred pages would be a generous outlying limit.

If you read the book's endorsements carefully, you'll notice two things: 1) most of the quotes are rather vague supportive statements, 2) they nearly all come from the author's denominational colleagues. There is a reason for both of these things: the book is not a finished product ready for public consumption.

Conclusion: measuring the book by its own message, the book flunks. A good message communicated poorly doesn't cut it. It's like reading a book on humility that reeks of pride, book on love that exudes self-interest, or a book on memorable communication that leaves no impression whatsoever. I hope that Dale Edwardson will one day fix the egregious errors of this book and get it properly produced because in a new format, it could really benefit God's Kingdom.

Review

"Howard Rosenthal is a gifted and humorous writer as well as a scholar's scholar who has a way of explaining complex concepts so they are understandable and easily remembered. The fourth edition of Encyclopedia of Counseling proves that and provides the reader with all the information necessary to pass the National Counselor Exam or any other test related to it. Rosenthal's book is exceptional and worth reading just for the fun of it."

Samuel T. Gladding, PhD, professor of counseling, Wake Forest University

"Dr. Rosenthal’s Encyclopedia of Counseling is an invaluable and comprehensive tool in preparing for all required counseling exams. Covering all eight areas of counselor competency, it is the only review tool one needs not only to pass the exam, but also to assure oneself that one has achieved a strong foundation on which to build one’s practice."

Kristy Cobillas, MEd, LPC, NCC, counselor, Agape Christian Counseling Services, St. Louis, Missouri

"Dr. Howard Rosenthal provides readers with the sole resource that is needed to successfully complete their licensure exams. The Encyclopedia of Counseling is written in a conversational tone that illuminates the myriad counseling concepts that will be encountered during the examination process by providing past exam questions, answers, and explanations. In my ten years of recommending this book, I have not had a single student or supervisee fail that has utilized it as suggested."

Rachelle D. Smith, PhD, LPC, Office of Diversity & Inclusion, Washington University in St. Louis

"Howard Rosenthal has done it again! Another book that is enjoyable to read and right on target for the readers wanting to prepare for exams, with complete explanations of questions and answer choices. His comfortable style is perfect for those with test anxiety and includes an excellent review of information for those who have been out of school for a while."

Deanna Kinder, LPC, NCC, executive director, American Counseling Association of Missouri

It should be better
By L. V.
It is an encyclopedic book that talks about everything and says very little about each topic.
There are typos too.
You will not learn much, unless you consult the references.
It is not as useful as PNA, but they cover primarely the same subjects.
The price is high, so think twice before buying it.

I think this book is very interesting. A perfect reference book for naval architects and marine engineers. Therefore, I have bought this book in order to give it to my teacher from University of Sao Paulo in Brazil - Dept of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. I hope he will enjoy this gift very much!
