George Gmelch is Professor of Anthropology at the University of San Francisco and Union College. He is author of 11 books and numerous articles, many of which have appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, Psychology Today, Society, and Natural History.

Excellent Wine Country Tour Guide Selection

My husband and I are from the NY metro area. This August, we are joining friends--a couple from Europe--for a holiday in San Francisco. This European couple has travelled widely, but they have never been to the Bay Area before. To ensure their trip is as perfect as possible, I wanted to prepare for each segment of the vacation. To bone up on the Wine Country part of the itinerary, I browsed the titles available on tourism, wine tasting, and Napa and Sonoma Valleys. I selected this book based upon its title, its academic press, and its very recent publishing date. The book is wonderfully written, but what delighted me most was the discovery that Mr. Don Partier was the author's subject for the profile of the consummate Wine Country Tour Guide. Back in 2003, my husband treated me to my first tour of Napa and Sonoma. After months of research and due diligence on guides, he selected Mr. Don Partier. That day in April of 2003 was unforgettable. I've since been to vineyards and tours across France, Italy, Germany, Spain, and Greece, but nothing has compared to the grand tour provided by the impressive, yet down to earth, Mr. Don Partier. Mr. Partier applied his native knowledge to our advantage, taking my husband and me to hidden gems in the Valleys that few would find without his expertise on the industry and the area. The Gmelchs' profile of Mr. Partier is incisive; no wonder he was such a fine host. Glad that he is still working in the industry, we will certainly be in touch with Mr. Partier to guide us and our European friends around Napa to "Taste the Good Life" this summer. Bravo to the Gmelchs for a great book on Wine Tourism in northern California, epitomizing the ultimate wine country experience from an insider's perspective.

A great insiders look at the Napa Valley

A must read for anyone who has been to Napa Valley, or is interested in going. This book gives a great overview of the history of the valley and an insiders peek at the people who make it thrive. Well-written with lots of information, not only is it an enjoyable read but an educational one. I appreciated my trip to Napa so much more due to the knowledge I gleaned from this book. Plus it is cheaper than a wine tasting and lasts a heck of a lot longer.

Have you ever tasted a good wine and wondered about the work that went into it? Or enjoyed a good meal in Napa and wondered about the lives of those serving it? This lovely book is replete with rich narratives about the people who work the soil, tend the tasting rooms, and assist others in enjoying a good meal. For those who have an interest in wine, people and the human journey, this is a pleasant read. I had visited Napa valley briefly before reading Tasting the Good Life. I plan to return to explore various adventures discussed in the book including biking, balloon flight, the Wind Train and wineries in this celestial valley. I would highly recommend Tasting the Good Life as a foretaste of Napa !

I wish I had this book 14 years ago!

I found the original Slicing Pie after reading an introduction about the book and realizing that the partnership dispute scenario that I just went through is unfortunately all too common. Like many, my business partner and I split equity too early during the formation of the company. Things were great until my partner abandoned the company without cause and this left us in an unfortunate battle for how to move forward. I wanted to buy him out, but he demanded a ridiculous amount of money even though the business had almost no revenue yet. This put an immense amount of stress on the business.

I read the entire book in one sitting. Everything resonated with me as I reminisced over the past 7 businesses that I've been part of over the years. Even though the most recent business is the only one where I had a serious partnership dispute, all the past partnerships could have been handled better and more fairly if we had the kind of moral and pie slicing agreements that this book discusses.

I fully employed Slicing Pie model in my latest (8th) business, and despite the typically life changes that sometimes happen between equity holders (one person had to leave for family issues, another couldn't contribute time after the initial push), there were zero issues or turmoil, because we had a fair agreement in place from the get go. Profit sharing distributions were even fairly made to those that had to leave early.

I really like the fact that the book distills the most common partnership scenarios down to basic formulas for determining everyone's slice of the pie. I see myself using Slicing Pie as the moral operating agreement for future ventures. It really covers a lot of scenarios in a much more simple way than any other business structure advice that I've heard before.

It's not perfect. But head and shoulders better than the available alternatives

The model is mostly fair and makes sense. I don't necessarily agree that risk doesn't go down with time. Even if you are at an adverse stage of the company, people before you participated with a lot less understanding of the product, market and hence took on a lot more risk. The person that started it all from scratch especially took on more risk and emotional suffering than a late stage participant would. And this is in my opinion the weakest link to the Slicing Pie model.

There might be exceptional circumstances that might make things more risky later in time than before. But in general risk should decrease overtime. Even if the company is at the brink of failure, it is much more clear on how much risk you are or aren't taking on by having the opportunity to decide whether to join later rather than earlier.

Ideally the multiplier will be completely floating to account for that. However I do agree it is very difficult and completely subjective to judge what would be the right multiplier for a particular circumstance. And hence making it a variable highly susceptible to abuse.

I suppose entrepreneurs will have to look into a fair scheme to compensate for this shortfall in the model, until a well accepted update to the model is available which hopefully incorporates this aspect into the calculations. But regardless, I agree that this is much closer to fair than what a fixed model would allow for.

More focused, easier to understand

I've read the original slicing pie, but I like the handbook better. Besides some small updates that come from the author's increased experience of using the model, I think the terminology in this version is simpler and more consistent. I'll definitely be recommending the handbook to my cofounders instead of the original book.

The author mentions an online tool, but isn't quite as transparent as I think he should be about pricing -- at the time of this writing, the pie slicer software is $10/month or $100/year. Although I think that's a reasonable price, it's easy to get the impression from the book that the pie slicer software is freely available to you. That is not the case (but there is a trial period). I've been implementing the model with just a couple of spreadsheets, so it's certainly easy enough without the specialized software, too.

About the Author
I am Mona Delfino, a Shaman by birth and overall a very happy healer. As a medical intuitive, energy runner, and healer for the last 30 years, I feel that putting this book out today is crucial with the amount of people I see shifting into who they truly are. In some ways, we might say this is a book of “Life 101” for people who are beginning to see themselves and every person around them going through immense change. In this book I will share with you a few experiences of when I was a kid so you can see that, from the beginning, these teachings are from absolute truth from my heart to yours. All of the thousands of healings I have contributed to have made such differences in these people that I feel now is the time to share this knowledge of how energy healing works. As far as I can see, this is what the future of health care is truly about, and it may provide answers to many questions arising around this dynamic topic. My feeling is strong about helping people discover their soul's true nature. I am skilled and certified in sound therapy; however, I feel the intent of the human voice is the best sound therapist. I have studied and had many opportunities to learn Indigenous ways, Native American and Hawaiian as well, along with several types of medicinal techniques.

Guidance During This Time of a Shift in Consciousness: Reclaiming Vibrant Health

I have recently finished reading Mona Delfino's The Sacred Language of the Human Body, and I highly recommend it. This book is written in simple language as a conversation, a fireside chat with the author, in which she shares with you information gained from her years of experience as a medical intuitive and vibrational healer. In recent years, we have been hearing about energy healing and how everything is composed of energy. Somehow traditionally we have not brought that perspective fully into the area of physical health! We have surrendered our care to the medical profession and to pills that we can take rather than listening to what our bodies may be trying to tell us. We have wed ourselves to finding a diagnosis and treatment as if the symptoms were separate from our thoughts and emotions. As we reclaim responsibility for our own wellness and connect lovingly with our bodies, we too can learn to listen to our bodies and heal ourselves and each other.

Mona has shared loads of information that offers guidance about what we are storing energetically in our bodies and how we can heal. This book inspired me to connect more with my own body and start a heartfelt communication so it does not have to yell at me so loudly through more serious illness. It also offers me a great reference for my own healing path. Hopefully Mona will be sharing more inspiration and information from her vast experience as we learn how to reclaim our vibrant health and be all that we can be.

I understand that this book will be out in Kindle form soon and also is available now on Mona's website as an e-book. I like it in paperback because it is a great reference for me. I like underlining and making notations as I use it as an ongoing resource in my own healing.

Worth every cent to learn what Mona has dedicated her life to.

This book is well written with insightful information on how to understand your body and this changing world we are experiencing. She discusses how the body responds to our thoughts, unconscious and conscious. Our medical system is breaking down and is not healing anything, but just trying to cover up symptoms. It is time we learn how to care for ourselves. I have personally had healing sessions with Mona, and she is the real deal, a female Shaman who reads the body. In her book you will learn from her stories in an entertaining way. It is a must read primer for us all. I downloaded the kindle version and was then able to read it right away.

Great Book!!

Mona writes in a easy-to-understand language that helped me understand medical concepts in a way that gives me back my personal power that I didn't realize I turned over to those I chose to fix me. I thought I was wanted help and didn't realize how much self-responsibility I turned over to my healers. Mona's book gave me some easy tools to work with that enabled me to understand just how powerful my thoughts and what I CHOOSE to believe is to my physical and emotional health. Great Book!

What's the problem?

I don't know Phil nor Gemori personally, so I don't have any particular bias. I had a subscription to Phil's online dictionary (tahititataou) several years ago, and with all due respect to Phil, I disagree with his review that this book is simply a copy of his web site or that it is only for tourists.
There is information on Phil's website that is not in this book and vice versa. For the most relevant material, this book covers most of what Phil's website covers.
It explains the importance of tatau in polynesian culture, it explains the symbolism, it explains how one might go about selecting symbols, and it provides case studies.
The latter, case studies, shows example tataus and breaks them down into the individual symbols. Phil's site does this too but not as well in my opinion.
The one thing that Phil's site provides that is rather useful is a list of names and contact info for well known top polynesian tattooists around the world.

My only three criticisms for this ebook are:

1. Table of contents do not let you jump quickly to the chapters.

2. Although it describes how one might go about designing one's tatau it does not mention a more important method- which is what you would really experience if you went to a polynesian tattooist. The tattooist will not usually ask you what specific symbols you want. Instead the tattooist will interview you and draw by hand his interpretation of what you tell them directly on your skin (no flash, just freehand). Then with your approval he will begin the tattooing. The tattooist chooses the symbols, not you. You and the tattooist enter a trust relationship and afterwards you will find that the outcome is even better than you could have imagined. I believe both Phil's website and this book underestimates how well a skilled tattooist can design something that is so much more aesthetically pleasing than you can.

3. The book is an advertising tool for its own website. But considering the low cost of the ebook and the amount of information received, I think the advertising in the book is tolerable.

Overall for the amount of money you pay for the ebook, it is well worth it. I can understand why Phil is concerned. He charges significantly more for a subscription, but not for substantially more information. I'm sorry Phil but I'm just being honest. Your website introduced me to the beauty of polynesian tattooing, but I think overall this book gives you better value for the money spent.

For tourists, not for someone serious about understanding Polynesian tattoos

I bought this ebook and was very surprised to see that although a very large part of the info given comes from my online Dictionary of Polynesian Tattoo Symbols, the author has not mentioned my publication as his source. He purchased my dictionary, and browsed my forum and put together his cheap booklet without really knowing the subject.
Obviously, because he didn't go the source himself, his small booklet is very superficial, at best good for tourists but not for someone really serious about understanding Polynesian tattoos. His approach lacks what Polynesian tattoo is all about: authenticity, honor and respect.

Good basics

The book covers several different Polynesian tattoo styles, but jumps between their descriptions, which could confuse some. Over all, a decent primer for those curious about Polynesian designs and their meanings. The text is large and easy to read, and concepts are very simplified. Don't expect to be an expert, but this book proves to be a good first step to understanding the culture and meaning behind various Polynesian elements of tattoo.

The JSA goes to War!

The Justice Society joins the war effort with this volume of the All Star Comics Archives. These four issues mark the beginning of the Justice Battalion, an odd little add-on to the US military, in which the JSA went after Fifth columnists, spies, and helped out with humanitarian deeds (such as getting food pills to Europe). The stories are naturally filled with jingoism and the accompanying racism, but like I always say, you have to read things with an eye toward the era it was created before getting filled with indignation. These comics were merely propaganda, done to inspire kids and provide some entertainment to the troops in battle. Nothing more, nothing less.

Simon and Kirby make their All Star debuts on Sandman with the final issue reprinted here. Jack Burnley, Bernard Bailey, Sheldon Moldoff, Stan Aschmeier, Cliff Young and many others also provide the pictures to Gardner Fox's fun, if often a tad contrived stories. This is an interesting volume from a historical standpoint, and is worth reading by any comic book fan or media historian.

...a book on effective classroom teaching that mixes classroom management with a constructivist and classroom community approach.

Wonderful. Dewey would be so satisfied by this.

Everything else you could need is included from theory to practical vignettes to handling specific classroom issues (not just behavioral).

It could have used pictures--it didn't have any--,but we can't always have what we want.

The information is wonderful sans the pics. Please check it out!

The "Merck Manual" of Education

This is undoubtedly one of the most popular college texts on teaching; at least, it certainly should be. The authors are leading experts on educational research, and their book is a comprehensive summary of what is known about teaching. Those preparing to be teachers should study it the same way medical students pore over The Merck Manual.

The book speaks with authority on nearly all important areas of instruction. For instance, whereas many popular books and articles repeat the myth that classroom rewards undermine student interest, G&B note that the research consistently shows that praise and other rewards are very beneficial when used properly. And while many teachers believe that high expectations magically transform students, G&B make it clear that it is what teachers do, not what they expect, that helps students learn.

College texts are seldom the sort of book that people turn to for a quick, entertaining read during vacation. However, as college texts go this one is well written and interesting, and it should be read by all teachers and kept on their shelves and referred to frequently.

DNA, RNA, nucleic acids and proteins. It was chosen from others Amazon suggested mostly by Index, Table of Contents and a random page, of which a surprising number were made available. I think it will supply all the background I will need for to take the Boards.

I am a clinical molecular geneticist, needing to refresh my knowledge on some of the methodologies before a major licensing exam. This was a very useful book, filled with historical perspectives. The next generation sequencing chapter was very comprehensive and up to date. Some of the pharmacogenetic chapters were simple literature reviews where I would have wished for a more rounded, insightful discussion. Overall, however, I would recommend this book for those wishing to get a nice overview of the molecular techniques used in the diagnostics.
