A Mixed Bag

I guess that Robert Ressler, the FBI agent who wrote this book, died a few years ago. Surely that was a loss, as Mr. Ressler helped catch a lot of serial killers, but he even supposedly coined the phrase "serial killer" in the first place, back in the late 70s or early 80s. But this was my first read from him, and I will say immediately that my review will be somewhat mixed.

I've read quite a few books from John Douglas -- an "underling" of Mr. Ressler's, and you'll be reminded of that maybe too many times in "Whoever Fights Monsters" (WFM) -- and overall, I've usually really liked Mr. Douglas' works. I actually think that the book "Inside the Mind of BTK" might be his best, even better than "Mind Hunter," another very strong effort. And since these two gentlemen worked together for so long, I decided to read WFM.

This book starts out very strong, and keeps it up, for at least three-fourths of the way through. In reality, Mr. Ressler is a slightly better writer than Mr. Douglas, and if Mr. Douglas has any weaknesses, I would argue that it would be using unnecessary ad hominems about the serial killers he describes in his books. You might be tempted to scoff, "They're serial killers! They deserve to have bad things written about them!" but that wouldn't be the point. We already know that serial killers are "bad," so I like it more when writers just stick to clinical terminology and avoid potential fallacies.

But oddly, this is how I believe Mr. Ressler ultimately fails in WFM, at least towards the end. He discusses bringing in psychics to help solve cases, which I think is at least problematic. In reality, I think that it's OK for the police and FBI agents to use psychics as a last-ditch effort, but those officials should remain quiet about it. And later, Mr. Ressler describes interviewing John Wayne Gacy and Edmund Kemper remotely for other agents at Quantico. To me, this is totally fine; when it comes to learning about serial killers, it's probably best to go right to the source. But where it fell apart for me: Mr. Ressler describes Mr. Gacy as being "very intelligent and logical." Now, I've watched several interviews on YouTube featuring Mr. Gacy from jail, before he was executed, and he was anything BUT a logical thinker. His "arguments" were full of red herrings, rationalizations, and non sequitors. So, either Mr. Gacy had a "smart day" during the FBI interview -- I highly doubt it -- or Mr. Ressler gives Mr. Gacy way too much credit here. I believe it's the latter.

But the worst part for me: Mr. Ressler's stand on capital punishment. I'm for the death penalty in some scenarios, and he seems to be against it. His position is fine, but I didn't agree with his logic for defending that position. His argument is something along the following lines, and I'm paraphrasing a bit. "Capital punishment is really just a means for people to get even. Furthermore, knowledge can be gained by keeping serial killers alive by interviewing them." Well, this is a little problematic, because there are other reasons for supporting capital punishment, such as "dead men can't kill again." As a matter of fact, I've read several cases in the news recently where convicted murderers have escaped from prison, and killed again; it obviously wouldn't have been possible if they had been executed. Also, people such as Ted Bundy have said that, if their lives are spared, they'll be willing to divulge more information. Most of the time, it's just stall tactics. It surely was with Bundy.

Well, it's too bad that this book ended poorly for me, but most of it is really solid, so I will give Mr. Ressler a 4 out of 5 rating on "Whoever Fights Monsters." I'll also add, "May you rest in peace."

Wow incredible read! A must read for true crime enthusiasts!

I LOVED this book! I've always been a true crime buff. Each book I read about particular cases about killers leaves me wanting....why? How can someone take the life of another with no more remorse or thought than tossing a used tissue in the trash? How can these monsters walk among us, date our daughters or suckle at our breasts without our knowledge? This book helped me to glimpse into the mind of a few killers thanks to Ressler. Thanks to him I didn't have to view these cold soulless eyes or get my hands dirty. We owe much to Ressler's amazing mind, his initiative and I dare say his amazing wife and children. He's dedicated his life to do this dirty work so that we don't have to. I'm sure there are many who are still alive and safe due to his work. I'm certainly going to thank God that he's around! I am grateful to have been able to understand a little better the kind of monsters who live among us and why they do what they do. Robert Ressler is a true American hero. Anyone who reads true crime MUST read this book! It will give an insight and a better understanding of the whys we so earnestly search for in these horrific cases. Thanks Ressler you are appreciated!

Very good book.

I loved this book. Ressler takes you step by step through his interviews, why he asks the questions he does, why he responds to the killers the way he does when he gets a certain kind of answer, and it is readable by a layperson. I saw Ressler speak at my college many years ago and was completely engaged by his lecture. When I by chance came across this book, I jumped at the opportunity to read it. If you are fascinated by serial killers and/or the idea of profiling, you will like this book.

One of the BEST Series EVER!!!

OMG!! I am an emotional wreck over this book, and I say that in a good way! This book has brought so many amazing feelings out of me, it was just so freaking AMAZING! Krystle Jones, the wonderful author, has managed to pull so many different emotions out of me, its just MIND BLOWING!!! That's the only words I can think that would even begin to do this book justice!!! AMAZING, FREAKING AMAZING!!!!

This book has literally brought me weak in the knees in more then a couple occasions! It was just....So...I can't even find the words to describe this book. But I'll try.

Cross My Heart had so much depth and emotion, that I was crying in so many different parts. I was screaming, and breathless , and shaking, and biting all my nails off, and in awe. It was just a roller coaster if ups and downs, and I wouldn't change a single thing about it! It was so action-packed from start to finish and it never let up! And that's the kind of books that I love. When a book can keep going and going and doesn't feel like it overdoing its self, then yeah, its definitely doing something right! Krystle evened everything out, but still kept it packed with a little of everything. I have been invested in this series since the beginning, and with each book that released, it has just gotten better and better. Krystle built suspense, action, drama, pain, heartache, love, emotion, betrayals, death and so much more with each book, that when this last book came, it just EXPLODED!! This is honestly Krystle Jones's best work yet, and honestly, I don't see how she could ever top Cross My Heart! But, I remember saying that with the last books too, so Krystle just might surprise me with her next series! This series has definitely left tracks in my heart and has claimed a part of me forever! Thank You Krystle, for giving me such an heart-throbbing experience with this series,

THE PLOT

Sloane has endured so much since that long time ago traveling to The Red Sector, from the safety of her home in The White Sector! She was sheltered and na�ve to what was really out there, and what people where really capable of. She has been through it all. You name it, she endured it, or at least watch someone she loved go through it. And after all the pain, heartache, and death, Sloane has endured, she has not let it break her. No, she has allowed it to manifest inside her, and make her stronger. With each new book, Sloane grew, and became so much more then I ever thought she would be. She is the true definition of a hero! Now, only if she was real...lol! But her lessons are real, her pure heart is real, her bravery and determination, is what keeps us going!

War is harsh and on the horizons, and if they thought they were in war before, then they haven't seen anything yet, as Frost rises in power, and turns lives into a living hell. Blood will bath the streets of both the underground and aboveground Cities. War is a definite, but who will survive and be the last ones standing is what is unsure, as Frost claims lives of humans, vampires, rogues, and even innocent children. She will hold nothing back as she quickly climbs the latter to power, killing everyone in her way, and all that rebels against her.

Sloane and her friends are strong, but not strong enough to take on all of Frost's militia, the guard, and the blackcross aboveground. But they will fight back with everything they got until only one side is left standing, hopefully her side. But her allies are not as strong as Frost's, or so she thought until Sloane's heritage is finally revealed, and all she's yearned to know about who she really is, is brought to the surface. And she is finally given the answers to who, or "What" she is. And what she finds out could very well tip the tides, and give them the manpower and skill to take down Frost, and all that threatens humanity!

The battle is here, the vampires and humans are fighting back. One side will fail, as these different creatures battle it to the death, in The Red Sector. Sloane just wants it to end. Wants the killing to stop, wants peace back on earth, wants vampires and humans to be as one. Wants all the pain and suffering to go away. Sloane is willing to fight with all she has to beat the ones hell bent on bring the demise to earth and all the walks on it. But the price is great, and if she wants to save humanity, she will have to fight for not only her life, but the lives of the ones she loves. Is she willing to put her life in danger at "chance" of winning this war against Frost and all she controls? Is she willing to give up on the cure to go and fight back? But most important, is she willing to sacrifice her friends and all the innocent bystanders to restore peace on earth, or at least what peace once was?

Sloane's a fighter, and she's willing to go to great lengths to end the war, but is she really willing to risk all this on just a chance of winning, and not even a big chance at that? Find out in the 3rd and final book in The Red Sector Chronicles. It will leaving you breathless, shaking, and demanding more, while your heart brakes, then sews itself back up, as you watch the battle play out like you would on the big screen. That's how vivid, and descriptive it was! Its a finale you won't want to miss! And if you haven't read the first two books in the series, then I suggest you stop what you're doing right now and go out and get them, because you are definitely missing out!

This is how you end a series! Krystle Jones didn't hold back in this fight to save humanity! I loved it, and I am SO SAD to see it end! I really think she should of written at least one more book. Not because it was incomplete, or their was unanswered questions. No, because I am selfish, and I don't want to say goodbye to my one of my favorite series EVER!!! Call me what'cha want, but hen I find something I love as much as I love The Red Sector Chronicles, I want to hold on to it, and never let go, at least for a very long time!! But I guess I'll survive, (If I have to, Krystle?) Hint, Hint...lol?

I will read this series from years to come, and I will still feel every single emotion that I felt the first time around! It's just that well written! The Red Sector Chronicles, "

A fitting conclusion to a great series :)

I have loved this series from start to finish, eagerly turning the pages to read the latest in Sloane's journey from becoming a vampire to find her family and her ongoing relationship with Aden and Leo. A roller coaster ride with plenty of tender moments, action sequences and the evil Frost gets what's coming to her. The author tied up all the loose ends nicely and leaves us with an ending that is well deserved. It just goes to show that sometimes happiness is not the destination but all part of the journey that we endure.
Definitely sad to see this series end as it is like saying goodbye to old friends but I am excited about Krystle's new projects. A great series that I will definitely re-read again.

I just finished reading this book. I really enjoyed this book lots of twists and turns and lots of action too. Some shocks too! I hated to see it come to an end wish there was another one in this set. It has been a great set of stories I have really liked them and will enjoy reading them over again. Would be nice to see them make a movie out of them!

I love this book

I love this book. I wish I could have listen to him while he was alive. It basically filled me in about the Clinton's, Acorn, Academia before I was born, ect. It even gave interesting facts about history. I had to fact check stuff on my own cause it felt so far off but it was all true. I feel like I could listen to Ben Shapiro or even Danish D’Souza talk about the late 90’s without being completely lost. If you want to know the origins of social justice warriors this is the book. Sounds a little conspiratorial but it perfectly explains this weird way of today’s thinking.

Great book from a courageous genius.

Andrew Breitbart is pulling back the curtain in so many areas you've just got to admire his courage and the energy with which he has focused on exposing hypocrisy if not downright blatant criminal activity. From the Leftist bias of Hollywood to the same in mainstream media with his BIG websites and now this terrific book, he is changing the face of practices-as-usual and validating those who don't fit into the Left's more frequent than not narrow and intolerant perspective within whatever industry is prone to such. Andrew Breitbart is doing what vast armies of people in media should be doing and he's doing it creatively, intelligently and honestly. This book was well written, entertaining, and makes the reader aware that there is a great deal more in the undercurrents than we realize.

Modern Day Revolutionary

Andrew Breitbart makes a strong case for boycotting the main stream media and embracing the new media. The author describes the incestuous relationship between the institutional left and the "Democrat-Media Complex". While helping launch the Huffington Post, and being the founder of Big Government, Big Hollywood and Breitbart.com, he makes his case for embracing independent new media on both sides of the political spectrum, similar to the UK's media model where neither the left or right media outlets masquerade as unbiased and objective when they clearly are not.

The author makes a prediction that the main stream media outlets will eventually marginalize themselves as a direct result of disregarding ethics and journalistic integrity and replacing those virtues with the the Alinsky-esque philosophy that the ends outweigh the means in pushing the institutional left's progressive agenda. A revelation that is slowly becoming a reality with massive layoffs and direct cash infusions required in various elements of the "Democrat-Media Complex" which will no doubt be subsidized by the public coffers under the guise of objective journalism, due to the public's loss of confidence in these outlets (defies logic, I know).

The author takes the reader to the Breitbart war room explaining how he forced the main stream media to cover the Acorn and "Weinergate" scandals, two of many feathers in Andrew Breitbart's cap. He also explained in detail how Matt Drudge forced the main stream media to cover the Lewinsky scandal when they, taking queue from the white house's John Podesta, were doing everything they could to stifle the story and discredit the messenger. The main point I took away from this book is that these types of controversies are newsworthy and necessary if we are to have an informed republic and that if the main stream media is going to continue to refuse to cover these types of stories until their hand is forced to do so, then I will consume my news feeds from alternative news aggregation sources that aren't adhering to a pre-shaped narrative, regardless of real world events.

It was George Orwell who stated that "In a universe of deceit, truth becomes a revolutionary act" - The late Andrew Breitbart was truly a revolutionary in his time, even if he wasn't the most eloquent writer.

Informative, expert, immensely useful

This is an immensely informative and practical reference, which is pleasantly surprising - at first appearance it looks like an academic (i.e. theoretical) work.
The authors' premise is that biometric systems, relying on fingerprints, retinal scans, speech patterns and facial thermography, are a highly effective solution for the problems of network security and authentication. He then explains how to assess the most effective form of these biometric methods which will meet an organisations' needs, how to implement such systems and understand their overall strengths and weaknesses.
Although security is a highly-important issue, the contents are of value to those interested in biometric systems in general - for example, this is a technology of interest to labour-hire organisations. Such companies may place many hundreds of casual employees on remote client worksites and need verifiable means to determine the employee's attendance and hours worked - in short, an unfoolable version of the old "time clock" punch-card system.
The authors detail at length the foundational mathematics or principles behind each biometric system covered, and spend equal time describing genuine implementations - using readily available (commercial) hardware and software. Helpful screenshots, tables and diagrams accompany these practical components and give full confidence that the reader can reproduce the results themselves (with the appropriate hardware and software, of course). For software developers, sample source code is also provided showing how the biometric devices can be managed from within Visual Basic programs.
Completing the book is a companion Web site with updated source code, articles and case studies.
For those who see value in biometric systems within their organisation - whether for secure authentication or other purposes - this book is a welcome and useful reference, replete with expert advice and guidelines. It is definitely a "must read".

Biometric Puzzles Revealed

There is a lot of mystery and myth concerning biometrics and the authors did a good job of exposing the facts and revealing the truth. "Implementing Biometric Security" breaks down the various forms of biometric technology into easily understandable blocks of information. Very few books breakdown the different forms of biometrics to the point that this one does. This is a true guide in helping you choose between biometric authentication systems. I'd recommend it a must read prior to investing time or money into a biometric business solution. The book is chock full of data. I found myself learning something new on almost every turn of the page. The good news is that I found it a fairly easy read and a great reference book. As a bonus, there is a companion site that has some readily available programs to get your biometric effort up and running. An excellent book for your work or personal IT library.
