Other, more liberal Christians see the Good Book primarily as literature, a metaphor for how people should live. Mine the pages of the Biblical Archeological Review and you'll find scientists trying to prove or disprove the historical reality of Old and New Testament events and structures--everything from the Ark of the Covenant to King David's palace. First, he focuses on the established 27-book New Testament canon based upon the "wide agreement about the twenty-seven works to be included in a normative or canonical collection." Second, he deemphasizes the prehistory of the documents (sources, editions, and so forth) and emphasizes the documents in their canonical form. He begins most chapters with a "General Analysis of the Message" and addresses issues such as authorship, date, and composition afterward. So, for example, readers are helped to understand the individual messages of Matthew, Mark, and Luke without getting bogged down in the "synoptic problem." Due to his emphasis on the finished form of the New Testament documents, even those who disagree with some of the author's critical judgments will benefit from this volume. A Quality Infroduction

Father Raymond Brown is, as always, impeccable in this "light" Introduction to the New Testament. He states in the opening section that this book is not for scholars. Somehow, I think this book has found its way onto the bookshelves of every pre-eminent NT scholar today. In spire of its heftiness, it is only an introduction to the NT.
It starts off with wonderful background material to NT times, examining contemporary thought, philosophy, and history. This helps the NT reader to understand the difficulties and issues which are being addressed by the author of a particular NT text.
After this background material Fr Brown insists that you actually read the specific book prior to reading his commentary and analyses of the text. If you do not do this, you will not be able to extract all of the information that Fr Brown is presenting to you. So I suggest one read the background material first, and then crack the Bible open to Mark and start reading along with Fr Brown, one text at a time. This will give you the most benefit for your effort.
It is important to make sure the material is fresh in your mimd. As time goes by, one tends to integrate the letters, gospels and parables into a working synthesis, and unless you know which version of a particular parable is being commented upon, the commantary and analysis will not be entirely useful.
I am enjoying this book immensely, and I encourage all serious Bible students, scholars or wanna-bes, to invest your time in this wonderful book.
One additional commanet: Father Brown is a Roman Catholic Priest. I have noticed that a lot of people have been making rather apologetic remarks for that fact on his behalf in these reviews. I am certain Father Brown , were alive today, sees no need for these apologies of faith. Father Brown, in my opinion, clearly demonstrates that the Catholic Church does not sacrifice reason in order to maintain faith.

Excellent introduction, great scholar

The late Raymond E. Brown was a tremendous scholar and a devout Christian. In all he did, Father Brown carefully applied the tools of critical scholarship while never apologizing for his faith. In a scholastic battlefield too often dominated by extremists on the left and the right, Father Brown was a breath of fresh air who drew fire from both sides.
This Introduction first provides helpful background information about the formation of the New Testament and the social and political world that produced it. Father Brown then carefully analyzes each book of the New Testament with consideration for issues such as who the author was, where the book was written, and who the author's initial audience was. More importantly, each book is then carefully analyzed in light of this information for the meaning it conveyed in the social and historical context in which it was written.
As another reviewer has said, you can't read this book beneficially without also reading the New Testament. But for searching, inquisitive readers who are willng to put in that effort, this book provides a truly informative, intellectually honest introduction to the greatest story ever told.

excellent intro from a moderate viewpoint

another 5 stars for father brown (unfortunately posthumously). in this book, brown, a renowned 20th century catholic priest/scholar, tried to write a readable yet comprehensive intro to all facets of NT study. this volume treats all NT books, albeit briefly, giving the consensus of modern scholarship regarding authorship, purpose, date etc. as a note to conservative evangelicals (of which i am one), brown here is decidedly centrist in his stances. in accordance with modern catholic doctrine on biblical interpretation, brown lets history shape our understanding of the biblical message. for instance, brown would agree that such NT books as 2 Peter, Colossians, Ephesians, 1 & 2 Timothy etc, were not written by peter or paul. if you have read enough of brown's work, you know he IS a believer, and only occasionally his writings reflect it. i should say that whether one is liberal or conservative, brown was one of the best NT theologians ever. even as a conservative i can get alot from his work. so...... get this book! even if you don't agree with all of it, you will learn alot!

Tome on DIA covers all bases

Lessons Learned is a long-winded tome on DIA and the complexities of airport management and design. Most of the book's facts and information are derived from already published sources. I would have liked to have seen exclusive interviews with the actual people involved in the making of DIA (politicians, workers, et al) -- this book is simply devoid of the investigative touch. Nevertheless, a lot of time and work went into writing Lessons Learned, of which the authors deserve credit. DIA is a story worthy of the 500 plus pages of material, unfortunately Lessons Learned drifts off into territory that will only interest those involved in airport design and management -- some of the technical discussion is boring and does not pertain to DIA directly. The book does explain in detail the political maneuvering within Denver that went into the making of DIA -- this material is the most interesting part of the book. In conclusion, if you share an interest in DIA or airports, get this book. I did and I don't regret it.

DU Law School is nationally, if not internationally, recognized as having one of the best transportation law programs in the United States. Paul Dempsey is, more than anyone, responsible for this honor. He regularly travels the globe as a consultant in all areas of transportation law. In the year I had Professor Dempsey, he went to China and Italy to consult with the local governments. Dempsey is also a founding and continuing member of the board of Frontier Airlines. If you are a CNN junkie, you've probably seen Dempsey testifying before Congress. In short, if you want the definitive inside scoop on the airline industry, and the building of DIA, you're not likely to find a more informed person than this guy.

This is a very general, yet complete, view of a complex story. It hits the highlights without the detailed research I was hoping to find. I wanted a book with some practical project management lessons learned specific to airfield construction. This book isn't that book. I gave it four stars because it is well written but not what I wanted.

Defender of a Culture, Under Occupation

Michael Collins was an extraordinary man, the inventor, it is said, of modern urban guerilla warfare; the man who led the war to end 700 years of British occupation of Ireland. Here was a man that was not a cog in in some vast socio-economic machine, whose only desire is "to just get along." He was one of those who didn't experience the benefits of the coexistence of two cultures in one land, because one of them was politically and economically savaging the other.

He did not have as his primary goal in life to accumulate the accouterments of a materialistic civilization for himself, nor did he ever have a mortgage to pay. He never owned a car. He never formed a family. He never knew such idiots who populate the safety committees of the industrial organizations in our own time, nor the phonies who infest our academies, longing for tenure. He loved his culture, as it was, and resented outsiders who had only scorn for it.

He was a leader of men, a man of action, a stickler for detail, who always knew what he wanted to accomplish. His physical courage was unimaginable to most men, even to those of his own time and place. His outstanding political skills and ability to do what was required to achieve the achievable was unmatched by any of the politicos and hotheads who surrounded him.

His primary task in the rebellion was in counter-intelligence, which he came to see required the assassination of informants and torturers, detectives and G-men, and the higher-ups of the British intelligence services who directed it all and placed a price on his head. This culminated in a "Bloody Sunday" in which his men attacked the "Cairo Gang" in their lodgings, some still in their beds, killing 19 of them. The Brits retaliated with a massacre of unarmed spectators at a football match, but ultimately it resulted in the opening of negotiations. Incredibly, Collins was chosen to lead the negotiating team, and wound up across the table from Lloyd George, Austen Chamberlin, and Winston Churchill. He brought home an agreement for the Free State.

Coogan tells his tale very thoroughly, at length, and with a satisfying balance of an attention to fact, considered speculation, and telling anecdote. He is an accomplished historian who knows his subject intimately. The author has written on the order of a dozen books on the modern history of Ireland, and is widely recognized for his authority, but not necessarily for an "objectivity" that belies the need for drawing lessons that should be the goal of any historian.

The book is at times, perhaps, a little too detailed for the general reader, but it is something of a "definitive biography", so I can forgive him for this. It is over 500 pages long with a very good bibliography, footnotes, and a terrific index. The 17 pictures are glossy and clear and add a lot to the story.

One of the most rewarding of things about reading this book is that it led me, I think, to a greater understanding of the events in Iraq, also suffering under an occupation by a hostile power, being fought by patriots and coreligionists in an urban setting, whose enemies from another land and religion label them terrorists and murderers.

insightful, but aimed at the knowledgeable

Tim Pat Coogan, whose father was one of Michael Collin's gunmen, and who later edited the De Valera-owned Irish Press has written two biographies of Michael Collins. Obviously, Coogan is, by no means, unbiased.

The first biography recounts Michael Collins life, and various exploits. It seems to be aimed more at the Irish, and those well-acquainted with Irish history; rather than to tell the story, and explain many assumptions he takes for granted, Coogan's focus is more on setting the record straight about Collin's life.

Coogan believes that de Valera - Michael Collins greatest rival - greatly loved Ireland, "but loved himself even more." He makes a persuasive case that in ignoring the differences between what the Irish Republicans could achieve and what they wanted, and not being straightforward with the Irish people, de Valera put his career above Ireland's well-being. Coogan considers Collins to be "the man who got things done," whereas de Valera was "the man who was always there to take the credit."

All in all a well-researched biography. Nevertheless, for the non-Irish, and for those unfamiliar with the history, this book will be less interesting. Many crucial questions that must be asked are completely ignored. These include, whether non-violent resistance was not an option, and perhaps the best option, and, if not, why not? Why did Collins not compel de Valera to join him in negotiating the poisoned chalice of the treaty? And many others as well.

Perhaps the main lesson this book imparts is that when the Irish Republicans lost Collins, they lost the man who got them results, and were lead by dawdlers in economic matters. This goes a long way in explaining why Ireland remained an economic backwater for so long.

This Book Deserves a Place in the Annals of History

Tim Pat Coogan's account of Michael Collins' life is not just a biography ; it is a unique journey through the life and times of a great Irish leader. This book deserves a place in the annals of Irish history.

Coogan painstakingly takes the time to explain how Collins lived, what motivated him and, where there are gaps in historical evidence, constructs balanced, informed reasons for his proposed closure of some of those gaps.

Each page is filled with the level of detail that bears testimony to tireless research, driven by the desire to tell the truth.

Michael Collins is portrayed as the complex character that he was, continually adapting to the changing political environment in which he found himself ; more than holding his own with the best in very diverse circumstances.

Coogan's account of the dilemmas facing Collins during the Treaty negotiations is masterful in capturing the tortured humanity of the man forced to make impossible choices.

The referencing and attention to detail are second to none.

INTRODUCTION
On February 26, 2012, my paper airplane design, Suzanne, flying 226 feet and 10 inches, broke the old paper airplane world record for distance by 19 feet and 6 inches. It’s fair to say that Joe Ayoob, my thrower, and I shattered it. The old mark had stood for nine years. Joe and I had made better distances in the six prior practices, but then, that’s what makes record breaking so interesting. A record during practice isn’t a record. It’s not official until declared so under the specific guidelines during a sanctioned attempt.

Records are made to be broken. It’s the whole reason for having them. The goal, the chase, the falling short, and the trying again are all required components of a record attempt. This record was no different. I tried many models over a three-year period when I was “officially” working on breaking the record. Of course, the truth is, every great distance plane I ever made was step toward this goal. My hope is that your world-record journey starts, or continues, here. Helping someone else break this record is another of my goals. Perhaps it will be you.

Believing you can do it is the first step. Making something as sophisticated as a flying machine from the most modest of resources is the beginning of an adventure. Where does it lead? Using less to make more is where we have to go as a planet. Eventually we’ll find a way to use less energy to light a room, less fuel to move from home to job, and make less pollution from powering the world. Viewed from this perspective, the answers seem obvious: conservation—yes, creating new products and technologies—yes, doing less—no, doing more with less—yes. And we’re back to paper airplanes.

I’m frequently asked what advice I have for budding paper pilots. Oddly, I’m usually at a loss. Folding comes so naturally for me, I can’t imagine not making paper airplanes. It’s taken me years to figure out that not everyone is like this. It’s true that some people might actually need encouragement. After giving this due consideration, I’ve come up with the following suggestion.
If you’ve never been to a Maker Faire, find one and go. It’s a celebration of making things—all kinds of things—from tiny robots to clothes to giant sculptures of steel and stone, and yes, sometimes paper airplanes. Making things is part of who we are as Americans and who we are as humans. From the biological imperative to make more people to the need to know who made that cake, we’re hardwired to like the whole idea.

As a kid, I liked making toys. My brothers and I would make spinning tops from wooden spools, rubber-band guns using spring-loaded clothes pins as the triggers, parachutes from napkins and string, rubber-band powered boats, kites, balsa-wood planes, and yes, paper airplanes.

Sadly, making things has been largely lost as part of our culture. Toys now need to “do something” so that even playing with the thing is optional. In my view, this is a huge mistake. We are robbing ourselves of a very important experience: experimenting, exploring, creating—in short, making things.

Paper airplanes embody the scientific method. Every throw is an experiment. It’s a hobby that begs the paper pilot to understand ever more in order to excel. Hypothesis, experiment design, trial, and results—it’s all built into every plane and every throw. To play with a paper airplane is to dabble in science, whether you know it or not.
We have a number of global issues confronting us. Global energy shortages, food shortages, water shortages, and something people are calling global warming are all worrisome. These problems will have answers that only science can provide. We have no spare brains on the planet. We need everyone thinking about these challenges in a rigorous way.

Imagine this: a world of people playing with science, who get up every morning, focus on what’s good, and imagine how to make more of that. You can call me a dreamer. I don’t mind. You don’t have to believe a word of what I say. Just make a paper airplane and experience how exhilarating that feels. We’re born makers. When you make something, anything from a pie to a pencil drawing, it’s like waking a dormant part of you. The world shifts slightly. You can feel it, and it feels good.

Suzanne, the world-record paper airplane, boasts a series of firsts: the first glider to hold the distance record, the first paper airplane to use changing airspeed to enhance performance, the first plane to use a thrower/designer team, and the first plane to break the record after the run-up-to-throw distance was shortened from 30 to 10 feet. It is a truly amazing aircraft. I believe Suzanne changes the way distance records will be broken in the future. The days of brute-force darts are gone, replaced by the age of true gliders.

A little free advice: take nothing for granted. Suzanne is a great aircraft. I didn’t find the design hiding in someone else’s work. I created it by working hard, listening closely, and observing keenly. You probably possess these skills too. This plane is only one of many possible solutions to the challenge. You may discover others.

More easy to make paper planes and info than you will probably ever need!

Collins has published several other books of planes and just gets better at illustrating how to fold them and explaining the nuances of making one perform. Many of the paper planes I've made over the years were dogs despite being advertised as great. This book helped me understand why. A slight miss-crease here, a bad fold there, and they usually added up to disappointment and were quickly consigned to the recycle bin. Collins discusses and illustrates how to tune your plane so it doesn't disappoint. In addition, there is a lot of easily understood information about the aerodynamics that allow these planes to fly. Who knew there is a correct and incorrect way to throw a plane? There is heavy, colorful, tear-out paper for some of the planes in the back of the book. But, I'll just continue to use regular printer paper or the card stock that fronts some magazines and advertisements. A useful, educational book.

Low-tech fun with the kids, but terrible print quality

I purchased this book for ideas for our school's Science Night, and was inspired after seeing John Collins' interview on Conan. While the folding and flying provide hours of entertainment, I was shocked by how poor the print quality is of the book. It looks like a low-resolution inkjet was used cover to cover, which makes discerning the folds difficult, and is a good strain on my eyes. I found that for the purposes of learning a few new paper plane designs, there are several decent Google Play/Apple App Store apps that provide clearer, animated folds for great flyers, as well as plenty of content online. I wish I'd previewed a hard copy of this book before purchasing.

Single largest collection of truly exceptional planes. . . for enthusiasts

This is one of two "must have" paper airplane books that are out there for serious folders.

I have collected almost every paper airplane book in or out of print that I could find in the last few years as I discovered that paperflight was a great way to combine two of my hobbies: paragliding and origami. So being the obsessive that I am for these sorts of things, I started rounding up every book on the subject and I discovered that there are really just two books that I couldn't do without: this book and LaFosse's "Planes for Brains."

Inside this book you will find all of Mr. Collins' most useful and elegant models with a few exceptions that can be found in his first book, "The Gliding Flight." The "Suzanne" model which was used to set the distance world record referenced in the title of the book is really the most elegant and impressive plane model around. It is simple enough that anyone over 6 or 7 could fold it, but it just goes and goes. Forgoing the tape and using nose or fuselage locks makes for a go-to plane in any situation. Two others not to miss in this book which were included in earlier books of his are the "Starfighter" and the "Boomerang." Both are great, especially the latter. With some practice at both folding and flying, the Boomerang is too much fun. And how Collins ever figured out how to fold this plane is a mystery as its folds are rather non-intuitive, however it is definitely worth learning.

There seems to be some dissatisfaction regarding this book in that the models are too complex. They are complex, but they are not the most complex around. They are, however, the most accomplished around. The models in the LaFosse book mentioned above are really beautiful and have their own genius to the folding (they are even more complex), but they do not perform as well as Collins' planes do. If you are looking for a rudimentary paper airplane book, I would recommend the Klutz book as it is simple, but has some useful ideas for kids to explore with.
