Marisha Pink is a rat race escapee turned author and entrepreneur.

Born and raised in London, from a young age she had an unhealthy obsession with books. She always dreamed of one day writing stories with the power to take readers on a journey, but somehow she wound up studying Chemistry and working in marketing instead.

After five years of climbing the corporate ladder, she decided that it was finally time to take the leap. Backpack in hand, she left everything behind to travel Southeast Asia and complete her debut novel,�Finding Arun. She's been on a mission not to live life by the book ever since.

I was gripped from beginning to end

The Last Piece of Me is the second book from talented author Marisha Pink, the prequel to Finding Arun.

I was gripped from beginning to end. I read it within a week whereas other books of similar length have taken me months due to putting it down and picking it up again. With Last Piece of Me that wasn’t an option.

Marisha has a great way of pulling you into the story. Revealing just enough within one chapter whilst leaving you hanging to find out what happens in the next.

The characterisation is solid and especially the emotional ups and downs of the main protagonist Catherine. Marisha paints this picture very well and generally makes it believable. Even when her web of lies becomes constant towards the middle to end of the story, you get more of a sense of the character being swept up with her desperation for the perfect family story she is ultimately after, than her actions becoming uncharacteristic.

It is a tale of contrasts too, described beautifully through the other main character Kalpana. You have the clinical nature of Catherine’s life as a doctor in London contrasted with Kalpana’s life as a servant in India.

Marisha leads us –through Kalpana’s life– to experience the beautiful sights and sounds of India. The language used, the pace of writing, the descriptions of the places, all aid in transporting you to the South Asian subcontinent.

I must confess, India is nowhere near the list of top destinations I’m interested in going to, but through both her books, Marisha paints a place that although in many ways has its corruption –as we’d see it from the West– still has it own unique, colourful culture worth exploring.

Overall, I give this five stars as there is very little (if anything!) I can say negative about it. It captivated me from beginning to end, transporting me to another world –as all good novels should. The quality of writing and editing was exceptional for a second novel.

If you read the blurb and think it’s not for you, I recommend reading the first chapter, whether on Amazon or in print. I didn’t think this series was for me, but was too drawn in after the first chapter and by then it was too late! I look forward to further books from this incredibly talented author.

Masterpiece in Storytelling

LAST PIECE OF ME, the prequel to FINDING ARUN, is another masterpiece in storytelling, connecting the dots between both novels. The second book not only answers the questions generated by the first by taking you on a unique journey back to the past, but it builds in such a way that you fully understand each characters’ strengths, weaknesses, fears and hopes. Once you have completed the journey with the author, you’re better able to answer the question: can lies ever be justified by the benefits they later bring? In conclusion, this book lends itself even more so to being a candidate for movie adaptation than the first. Looking forward to the author’s next work.

Interesting and unique story!

Loved this wonderful story. It was so sad when Vivek just left his family that day and went back to his parents. Interesting how Catherine lied about Gupti just to make sure that Kalpana would give her the unborn baby that she was pregnant with. Arthur was very clingy and I hated that he wouldn't understand that Catherine wanted to be a mother no matter what. It was crazy how many times Arthur kept calling her when she was staying at the shelter. Marisha I love your book and I can't wait to read the rest of the series about Arun/Aaron, Kalpana, and Catherine. Good job on your story. Keep up the great work. Good luck on all your future endeavors.

Full Body Presence is a must for living your best experience of life

Posted 03/01/10: Full Body Presence is a comprehensive manual about how to live life feeling a deep internal ease instead of feeling anxious and fearful. The book offers detailed instructions, examples, and a wonderful step by step protocol about how to feel more of the support that our bodies can offer us. You will also gain invaluable information about how to be more present to your everyday experiences through the sensations of your body. As an Occupational Therapist this makes perfect sense to me because physiologically we only register the memory of experiences through sensation. Finally, someone has put into writing in an organized fashion how to actually feel sensation in a very present way and live from a place of steadiness. Some people call this being grounded, I am experiencing this as living life with a sensation of feeling a fullness of connection to all that supports me in all of life.

A set of practical tools for present moment living

The classic self-help book "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle provides convincing evidence of the critical importance of focusing our attention in the present, for it's the only time we experience that is actually "real." In Full Body Presence Suzanne Scurlock-Durana takes Tolle's excellent work a step further by providing very practical tools to assist you in becoming more "present" in your life (as opposed to the common human tendency to constantly ponder about either the past or the future).

When you purchase this book, you also gain access to three free down-loadable audio "Explorations" to assist you in the process. The first is called "Opening Awareness", the second is "Grounding and Filling", and the third is "Healing the Internal Resistance to Life". I've used all three of them for several weeks and they are very powerful audios. The author has a lovely voice and the audios give the impression that she's sitting there right with you coaching you through the exercises. As such, I highly recommend this book (and the audios) as a spiritual growth resource. Here's one of my favorite passages from it:

"Another common form of resistance is to secretly, nor not so secretly, wait for the someone or something of one's dreams to come along to finally make one whole and truly happy. This behavior patterns shows itself in various forms - a fear of rejection, impossibly high standards, a fear of commitment or of entrapment, for example. In whatever form, this pattern limits use because we disconnect from our internal experience and dissipate our energy focusing outside of ourselves, looking for that other person or situation that is going to solve our internal distress or loneliness. In this pattern, we once again unknowingly relinquish our power. When we stop waiting and we take back the responsibility for our happiness, our power returns as well. Opportunities come to us when we are at home in our power, open to receive what we desire."

About the Author
Emily Jane Bront� was the most solitary member of a unique, tightly-knit, English provincial family. Born in 1818, she shared the parsonage of the town of Haworth, Yorkshire, with her older sister, Charlotte, her brother, Branwell, her younger sister, Anne, and her father, The Reverend Patrick Bront�. All five were poets and writers; all but Branwell would publish at least one book.

Fantasy was the Bront� children’s one relief from the rigors of religion and the bleakness of life in an impoverished region. They invented a series of imaginary kingdoms and constructed a whole library of journals, stories, poems, and plays around their inhabitants. Emily’s special province was a kingdom she called Gondal, whose romantic heroes and exiles owed much to the poems of Byron.

Brief stays at several boarding schools were the sum of her experiences outside Haworth until 1842, when she entered a school in Brussels with her sister Charlotte. After a year of study and teaching there, they felt qualified to announce the opening of a school in their own home, but could not attract a single pupil.

In 1845 Charlotte Bront� came across a manuscript volume of her sister’s poems. She knew at once, she later wrote, that they were “not at all like poetry women generally write…they had a peculiar music–wild, melancholy, and elevating.” At her sister’s urging, Emily’s poems, along with Anne’s and Charlotte’s, were published pseudonymously in 1846. An almost complete silence greeted this volume, but the three sisters, buoyed by the fact of publication, immediately began to write novels. Emily’s effort was Wuthering Heights; appearing in 1847 it was treated at first as a lesser work by Charlotte, whose Jane Eyre had already been published to great acclaim. Emily Bront�’s name did not emerge from behind her pseudonym of Ellis Bell until the second edition of her novel appeared in 1850.

In the meantime, tragedy had struck the Bront� family. In September of 1848 Branwell had succumbed to a life of dissipation. By December, after a brief illness, Emily too was dead; her sister Anne would die the next year. Wuthering Heights, Emily’s only novel, was just beginning to be understood as the wild and singular work of genius that it is. “Stronger than a man,” wrote Charlotte, “Simpler than a child, her nature stood alone.”

The only edition to buy

This review is aimed more toward the Norton edition than to JANE EYRE. We all know this is a classic. Bronte was simply a genius and a harbinger of romantic, dramatic, gothic, and horror writing. (However, it still irks me that she couldn't end a simple sentence with a period. Every declarative statement, it seems, must be qualified with a colon or semi-colon. Oh well. Sign of the times.)

As for the Norton edition, it's the only one to buy. Bronte makes the assumption that you have read the Bible cover-to-cover a zillion times, and for those of us who have not read it through once, Norton's annotations are more than helpful---they're essential to understanding the novel's Christian allusions. This edition also provides the reader with critical essays, contexts of Bronte's life, Bronte's reactions to critics of her day, etc.

Bottom line: you can get the Dover Thrift edition for a couple bucks, but, if you are interested in giving this classic more than a cursory read, this edition is worth the extra money.

wuthering heights editions

Rather than delve on the contents of this strangest and strongest of English novels, so intensely poetic in its haunting darkness and otherness, I'll comment briefly on the best editions available for a good first contact:

A) Text oriented editions (that is, editions with few materials added: normally an Introduction, annotation, and perhaps Charlotte's Peface and Biographical Notice and some bibliographical indications).

1. Oxford World's Classics: authoritative text, good annotation,
excellent introduction.

2. Penguin's Classics: same as above, everything looks a little shorter but is excellent nonetheless.

3. Wordsworth Classics edition. This would be a rather fine edition as befitting this collection, if it had a good 1847 text and not the heavily tampered-with Charlotte's 1850 edition. The text itself reflects accurately that of the 1900 Haworth Edition -a careful one-. The wording changes aren't perhaps so worrying nor is the toning-down of the dialectal tirades -although funny and useless-. What is worrying is the disappearance of more than six hundred paragrapph entries (I mean just the paragraphing, not the contents itself!), that makes for a different -and worse- reading experience. Very good and full -if brief- annotation. Mass-market, glued paperback.

4. Heather Glen's for Routledge. One of the finest text-oriented editions, especially for the excellent Introduction and Epilogue together with its good annotation, out-of-print for rather obscure reasons. If you find still a very good to fine copy at amazon Canadian branch (or at abebooks.com, it would be a good buy.

5. Orchises two-volume facsimile reprint of the 1847 edition. No notes nor any additional material. the books are well produced if a little expensive. Very interesting item, but only suitable for textual scholars or would-be scholars, or otherwise for fetish-oriented WH-maniacs.

B) Study-oriented editions (i.e. editions that contain additional contextual information: early reviews, selection of Emily's poems, critical essays, chronologies of the novel or of the Bronte family...).

6. Norton's Fourth Edition (current item): OK, the text is still a little idiosyncratic, but the notes are much improved, and so is everything else (with the anthology of poems, and the critical essays). A very fine study edition but also suitable for a first contact, although annotation is still on the scarce side. Good paperback production without flaps but signature-sewn (or so it seems) and good paper and printing quality (albeit with a rather small type).

7. Broadview edition by Beth Newman: it's one of the best study editions overall. There are some minor textual foibles and the annotation is decidedly scanty (to make amends for Heywood excesses) but good and accurate, and both Prof. Newman ecellent Introduction and the selection of the additional contextual material is, arguably, the finest ever (including the very interesting document on "Brain fever"). Materially speaking, it is a good paperback without flaps with good paper and printing quality (like Norton Critical, although I can't ascertain without tearing apart my copy of Beth Newman's that it be signature-sewn instead of glue-only "perfect binding). In any case a very good buy.

7. Alison Booth's for Longman Cultural. Other of the very best study editions available. The text is deadly acuurate -except for some 1850 unobtrusive detail- on the
Clarendon 1976 reference critical edition, although the punctuation -like Norton Critical, Broadview's Newman and Oneworld's one- has been silently lightened and modernized throughout. It looks like glue-only "perfect binding" paperback, but perhaps it is signature-sewn. Paper and printing quality are good enough. The only misgiving I have is the overdone fragmentation of contextual material (good and relevant material though it is): there are 40+ items, many of them very short or they wouldn't fit into 430 pages. One of the best possible buys.

8. Onewold's Classics edition. A fine paperback edition with flaps, very good paper and printing quality and (I rather surmise than know for sure) signature-sewn. The text looks like 1847 in paragraphing but it takes in too
many of 1850 "improvements" and is wrong at some places: it's short of a disaster, but rather non-reliable (in spite of the well-meant efforts by the almost anonymous editing panel who perpetrated it). Annotation is good and comprehensive enough, but the contextual material is rather scanty and run-of-the-mill non-commital.

9. Barnes&Noble's Tatiana Holway edition (hardcover). To say it promptly the only fault with this lovely edition (but, as stated above in wordsworth Classics edition, a really big fault) is its accurate and reliable 1850 Haworth Edition text. Other than this, it looks as a popularly oriented edition, but with quality marks. The Introduction by Daphne Merkin is good enough, the annotation by Holway is really excellent. Supplementary material is very scanty: the "Charlotte's prefatory materials" of 1850 (prefixed to the text, which is a pity), and some comments about film and TV adaptations as well as some chosen excerpts of reviews. Material production is outstanding: nice hardcover with dust jacket, good paper and printing quality, the only good available edition in a becoming format (Clarendon Edition is very hard to come by nowadays: say one to three years to pin it down). Don't forget the Franklin Mint editions of the sixties and seventies if you are interested in a very beautiful book with a reliable 1847 text and illustrations by Alan Reingold (and nothing else).

Do not miss out on this book...

You know all those 'classic' novels you read in high school? How many of them do you actually remember? Well, if Jane Eyre was one of those long-forgotten books, pick up a copy. To read it as an adult is a joy: it's a sweeping, disturbing, intense, thrilling, very romantic gothic love story, written in the voice of a very intense, almost claustrophobically self-aware young heroine. Jane is no Ophelia - she's a complicated, remarkable character, and a very strong female character in a genre that usually draws women as beautiful victims at best.

There's something for everyone in this book: Windswept castles, difficult and neurotic family members, dark secrets about tragic former lovers, good triumphing over evil, all that good juicy stuff that makes a great romantic story. What elevates Jane Eyre is Bronte's remarkable style & skill and her sharp and complex characterizations.

Trust me on this: If you don't remember it from your teens, you should give it a try now. Here is one novel that more than lives up to it's 'classic' status.

In a sense, Dave Robicheaux, Burke's Cajun detective, whose heart is in the past and whose eyes are on the horizon, expecting trouble, has always been anticipating Katrina--or at least some form of cataclysm--as he has watched his world spin further and further out of control. The real deal...

I think that James Lee Burke outdid himself with his latest Dave Robicheaux mystery, The Tin Roof Blowdown. Burke has often used the backdrop of New Orleans for his often dark and tortured books. But no fictional event could have provided as much material as Hurricane Katrina did in 2005.

Dave Robicheaux is a detective with the New Iberia Sheriff's Department, outside of New Orleans. When Katrina hits the Crescent City, all outside law enforcement agencies sent available officers to aid with the chaos that resulted. Robicheaux spent time in Viet Nam, but nothing he saw in war could have prepared him for what he witnessed in New Orleans. When he left Nam, he thought he would "never again have to witness the wide-scale suffering of innocent civilians, nor the betrayal and abandonment of our countrymen when they need us the most. But that was before Katrina. That was before a storm with greater impact than the bomb blast that struck Hiroshima peeled the face off southern Louisiana."

In The Tin Roof Blowdown, bounty hunter and Robicheaux friend, Cletus Purcel, is trying to pick up some bail skips right before Katrina hits. But the same men that Purcel is after end up being wanted for a host of other crimes as well. Not only that, but they've stolen a fortune from the top Mafioso in New Orleans. So not only are the cops looking for them, but some unsavory characters are as well. How these characters all converge is vintage Burke.

One of the things I like best about Burke's books is that he makes the locale a major player in his stories. He has a love/hate relationship with New Orleans and calls her the Whore of Babylon. When driving through the ruined streets, he muses "New Orleans had been a song, not a city. Like San Francisco, it didn't belong to a state; it belonged to a people." He describes southern Louisiana with lush brushstrokes, from the bayous to the wildlife to the marshes. But where he outdoes himself in The Tin Roof Blowdown is in his descriptions of post-Katrina New Orleans. No pictures that you may have seen will accurately tell the story of what happened to this historic city as well as Burke does in narrative form. It is that vivid and that horrible.

James Lee Burke tends to publish a new Robicheaux every July. Fortunately for us, while prolific in his writing, he isn't publishing books just to meet a deadline. The Tin Roof Blowdown is the real deal.

Excellent setting & characters, depth of insight

I lived in New Orleans for >20years pre-Katrina. I had dear friends who bravely served NOLA during/after Katrina: an insurance agent, a young National Guardsman who worked at/around the Superdome during/after the storm, and a nurse who chose to stay at her post for the storm. Each suffered and survived the panic, disorder, fear, etc. described in this book. They also witnessed and experienceed moments of grace when least expected. The mystery holds the book together well. The chilling descriptions of what desperate people can do is true. Well done.

Best of the Dave Robicheaux Series

Best of the Dave Robicheaux series. Less characters than his other books, and I love how he intertwined actual events within the story itself. It's been a while since I was invested in Alafaire, but she has a really good storyline and is well-written. The only character I haven't fallen in love with is Molly, and I can't quite put my finger on the "why." Of course, Bootsie was a hard act to follow. The series was my summer reading list, and so far this is my favorite.

I didn't expect him to love his dead wife

I didn't expect him to love his dead wife. Through the book it was all he remembered and I couldn't believe in the romance. The whole idea of Deadly Duet was that they were bad but women changed them because they were special. Cherry, she had sad story but I felt sorry for her because she got Elijah who forever loved his dead wife with whom he had a daughter. I mean constant pictures, memories of her and the sex. Just no.

I loved this book, once I started I just couldn't put it down.
As we know from the previous books Elijah is a dangerous man, he's widowed with a fifteen year old daughter Mindy and while sorting out a deal Elijah is gifted Cherry if he doesn't take her he knows she'll be killed but will suffer beforehand so he's left with no real choice.
Since the death of his wife Elijah has raised Mindy single handed plus security of course and he's done a fabulous job but there's no substitute for a female presence and that's what Cherry provides and Mindy latches onto her. The relationship between the girls comes about naturally and we know it's only a matter of time before Elijah and Cherry find their way to each other.
Another thing I liked was Cherry, she'd been through so much and maybe as a result of that she was so level headed, no unnecessary drama, tantrums or escape attempts she was a really good character and I also liked that Elijah loved his wife, it's so easy in books like these to paint the previous relationship in a bad light and I appreciated that this wasn't the case here, he just slowly moved on.
For me this was the best of this series while I really enjoyed 'Fear the Boss' and 'The Scarred One' I loved this.

Elijah first appeared in the Deadly Duet books, I'm so pleased the author decided to give him his own story. When Elijah is called to a warehouse by a man he does business with, there's a gift waiting for him. A young woman, if he doesn't want her they are going to kill her. With no other option Elijah takes Cherry home. Elijah has a 15 year old daughter Mindy whom he has brought up by himself since his wife died giving birth to her. Mindy immediately takes to Cherry. There's a spark of attraction between Elijah and Cherry but she's only 20 to his 39.
I loved this story everything about it was well done from the plot to the characters. I especially liked Elijah he's a bad man with a touch of vulnerability about him, there's plenty of hot and heavy scenes as well. I even liked the cover. A recommended read

Absolutely useless for completing assignments since the pages are not numbered and I cannot jump to a specific page. I learned my lesson. I'm reading reviews before purchasing ebooks through here again. I'm very disappointed I wasted $60 for a book that is useless!!!!
