About the Author
Paul Calter is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Vermont Technical College and Visiting Scholar at Dartmouth College. A graduate of The Cooper Union, New York, he received his M.S. from Columbia University and a MFA from Norwich University. Professor Calter has taught technical mathematics for over twenty-five years. He is a member of the American Mathematical Association of Two� Year Colleges, the Mathematical Association of America, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the College Art Association, and the Author's Guild.

Calter is involved in the Mathematics Across the Curriculum movement, and has developed and taught a course called Geometry in Art and Architecture at Dartmouth College under an NSF grant.

Professor Calter is the author of several other mathematics textbooks, among which are the Schaum's Outline of Technical Mathematics, Problem Solving with Computers, Practical Math Handbook for the Building Trades, Practical Math for Electricity and Electronics, Mathematics for Computer Technology, Introductory Algebra and Trigonometry, Technical Calculus, and Squaring the Circle: Geometry in Art and Architecture.

Michael Calter is Associate Professor at Wesleyan University. He received his B.S. from the University of Vermont. After receiving his Ph.D. from Harvard University, he completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of California at Irvine. Michael has been working on his father's mathematics texts since 1983, when he completed a set of programs to accompany Technical Mathematics with Calculus. Since that time, he has become progressively more involved with his father's writing endeavors, culminating with becoming co-author on the second edition of Technical Calculus and the fourth edition of Technical Mathematics with Calculus. Michael also enjoys the applications of mathematical techniques to chemical and physical problems as part of his academic research. Michael is a member of the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Chemical Society.

Michael and Paul enjoy hiking and camping trips together. These have included an expedition up Mt. Washington in January, a hike across Vermont, a walk across England on Hadrian's Wall, and many sketching trips into the mountains.

I got an A in my course...

This book was actually very good at explaining some rather complicated things (to me anyway!). There were a few errors in the examples in the early chapters (most notably the chapter reviewing/intro to algebra - things like signs inverted) but these may actually have helped me because I was less likely to turn to the answer key without really trying to get it myself. The online companion part is fantastic, and in my opinion really justifies the price (which is quite high even for a text book). Overall I recommend this book, just make sure you check your answers rather than necessarily take theirs as correct :) I got an A in my class (after only really having a low level understanding of higher level math before) - so it taught me well enough. My only gripe is that the answer key only lists the odd-numbered questions (all answers available online), and even the online part only shows step-by-step solutions for the odd numbered questions - some of the even numbered ones I'd like to have seen a guide on.

Technical Mathematics,Fifth Edition, by Paul A. Calter , does a marvellous job in explaining Technical Mathematics.
The information comes in Small Segments so that you are not overwhelmed by multi-segments developments.

You probably remember mathematical texts deep in theories but with scarce examples and convoluted abstract terms; well, Paul A. Calter explains every term in ordinary language with plenty of detailed examples. You see mathematics in use and not just to pass tests and exams.

It starts from plain Addition and Substraction , introduces to Algebra and takes you up to Complex Numbers and Sequences,Series, and the Binomial Theorem.

I particularly loved the 4th chapter on Functions and Graphs.
Well worth its price.

Brilliant Blackthorn at is absolute best!!

Blood Dark, the fifth instalment in Lindsay J Pryor's Blackthorn series and how aptly named. It's a dark and dangerous roller coaster ride that pulls on your heart strings from every direction!
It centres around Kane and Caitlin, the first couple from Blood Shadows, however all the players are coming together and the much anticipated first meeting between the three 3rd species leaders (Kane, Caleb and Jask) did not disappoint! We were allowed to see much deeper inside the soul of the master vampire, Kane and his role and reason for being in Blackthorn (love his choice of weapon). His relationship with Caitlin was stretched to the limit (at times I wanted to knock their heads together), but their chemistry together sizzled even hotter than in Blood Shadows. All the major characters make an appearance (plus a few new ones too), each adding to the tension surrounding the impending prophecy.
This book twisted and turned, just when I thought I had something figured out, I realised I hadn't at all! I laughed, I cried (there are some tear jerkers that made me shiver.....) but I didn't want this book to end. It will be a long wait for the next instalment to this amazing story. Well done Lindsay, can't wait for more Blackthorn :-)

Longer Review –

Blood Dark is the 5th instalment out of a series of 8 books about the World of Blackthorn. The previous books Blood Shadows, Blood Roses, Blood Torn and Blood Deep all introduce pivotal characters, two at a time. Blood Dark is the first of the books where you see interaction between these characters as the plot lines interweave and, as a consequence, the series really picks up pace.

As a backdrop, the World of Blackthorn consists of 4 towns; Blackthorn, Lowtown, Midtown and Summerton. Blackthorn is dangerous, gritty, over populated, polluted and Summerton is a direct contrast, green, full of open spaces and beautiful.

The inhabitants of this world are rated on a sadistic points system (for example how good your bloodline is), and depending on how they fare, this will determine their future potential, employment status, social status, but most importantly, where they are allowed to live. Summerton is for the elite, the affluent and is full of green spaces, great schools and medical care, where as at the opposite end of the spectrum, Blackthorn is full of vampires, lycans, who ever is determined to be social detritus, not forgetting the convicts that have been discarded by the state. In Blackthorn, there is no funding for education, social wellbeing or medical care. It is survival of the fittest. Strangely enough, in this unjust and corrupt system, the suppressed factions within Blackthorn are at breaking point.

Blood Dark is the continuation of the story of Kane and Caitlin (which began in Blood Shadows) and the problems that their ongoing relationship is causing, both individually and together. I thought I had it all worked out, and yet I couldn’t have been more wrong as to where their story would take me. It is full of plot twists and turns and, as well as being an emotional rollercoaster it has an intensity about its content that is addictive and whilst each story does answer some questions, more arise as you progress!

Lindsay J Pryor has managed to create not only a fantastically believable backdrop (Blackthorn is a character in its own right) but her characterisation is well rounded and robust. Each of her anti heroes and heroines are flawed in some way, but they also display loyalty, kindness and determination. Its all about shades of grey – how characters behave in given difficult situations does not always determine who they are. Who is to say that they are the heroes or the villains of the piece? Its all down to perspective. It is a joy to read books with intelligent heroines, and the internal monologues highlighting the characters’ thought processes as they deal with whatever challenging situations they find themselves in, are wonderful.

But, as with any good story, there is also plenty of conflict to keep you on the edge of your seat, as the main characters do tend to suffer from an inability to trust and communicate well with each other, as well as having stubborn streaks. All of which combine to make you turn the page to find out what happens next.

Personally, I think that Lindsay is immensely talented, I love her style of writing and I think that she deserves every success. The only downside is what am I going to do with myself until Blood Instinct comes out and the JASKFEST can begin. Go Team Blackthorn! xx

A very strong return!

I am so glad I gave this series another chance, ladies and gents! What happened is that I loved book one and two, was disappointed in book three and skipped book four... However, when I saw that the main characters in book five are Caitlin and Kane - the couple which made me fall in love with Blackthorn, I HAD to give it another go... and it was darkly delicious!

It's choke full of sensual, sizzling sex, heart-breaking tension and an overall gripping and fascinating storyline. It strongly reminded me of The Maker's Song series by Adrian Phoenix.

Despite their undeniable attraction to each other and love that they won't admit to themselves, Caitlyn and Kane continue to work on the opposite sides of the barricade. He is one of the shadow rulers of Blackthorn - the third species' conclave, which human population would love to destroy once and for all. She is an agent of the enforcement agency VCU, hunting Kane and other criminals alike inside and out of Blackthorn.

There are so many reasons for them to stay apart, and yet despite the evidence piling up, indicating that Caitlyn and Kane will destroy each other, they can not give up their feelings. There is this major conspiracy going on designed to force them to betray each other, and I was figuratively biting my nails and holding my breath, racing through this book.

It's very well written. The tension and urgency is razor-blade sharp. You get sick to your stomach along with Caitlyn when she receives evidence against Kane again and again; you feel bitterness of betrayal, when he sees how Caitlyn might be working to put him behind the bars. The storyline is grand and involves an old prophecy which is supposed to bring in the downfall of the human race, and the rule of the third species. There are a few factions working to make sure that the prophecy will or will not come to life to their benefits.

I am not giving any spoilers, but Blood Dark made me very happy. It's not sappy and it skirts a very fine line between PNR and UF without in your face macho bulls*** I am so not fond of.

Kane might be possessive but he is also supremely cold-blooded and rational and keeps his secrets very close to his heart. He asks, not demands, but in a way, where Caitlyn knows - one wrong step, and she will lose him. Same vice versa. The dynamics are similar to Raphael and Cyn (D.B. Reynolds), so if you are a fan, you are very likely to find this series enjoyable. It's dark, violent and genuinely suspenseful. Recommended.

About the Author
Karen Seccombe is a professor in the School of Community Health at Portland State University, located in Portland, Oregon. She received her B.A. in sociology at California State University, Chico, her M.S.W. in health and social welfare policy from the University of Washington, and her Ph.D. in sociology from Washington State University. Her research focuses on poverty, welfare, access to health care, and the effects of social inequality on families. She is the author of Marriage and Family: You and Society (Pearson); “So You Think I Drive a Cadillac?”: Welfare Recipients’ Perspectives on the System and its Reform, 3rd edition (Allyn and Bacon); Families in Poverty (Allyn and Bacon); Just Don’t Get Sick: Access to Health Care in the Aftermath of Welfare Reform, with Kim Hoffman (Rutgers University Press), and Marriages and Families: Relationships in Social Context, with Rebecca L. Warner (Wadsworth). She is a National Council on Family Relations fellow, and a member of the American Sociological Association, and the Pacific Sociological Association, where she has held elective offices. Karen lives in Portland with her husband Richard, a health economist, her ten-year-old daughter, Natalie Rose, and her eight-year-old daughter, Olivia Lin. On the forefront of scientific knowledge

Really important book. There is not enough literature out there on this subject, although a lot of scientific journals are publishing about the effects of electromagnetic radiation. For those who don't read journals, this summarizes nicely what has been studied to-date and why it is an important topic for consideration. This is food for thought. We are surrounding ourselves with electronic devices on a daily basis. But a lot of studies are being published demonstrating that low levels of radiation over a prolonged period of time can and does have an impact on the human body. I like how much effort was put into this volume. I can tell by the number of sources and broad overview of the subject matter. I think this book is good for those who are not familiar with the topic and want to learn more.

Don't wait for the government to protect you...

Unfortunately, as I've gotten older, I've seen more and more abuses of power and greed by the people we've entrusted to lead us and help us. How long did it take the government to do something about big tobacco? You think they didn't drag their feet as long as possible because of the money they were receiving from their lobbyists? And you don't think it's happening now with cell phones and electronic devices? Think about how many companies, BIG companies, make BIG money from electronic devices. And that's where most of their revenue comes from; health concerns are not on their radar - unless the marketplace demands it.
Thankfully this book has opened the doors (and it will open your eyes) to what our "harmless" everyday devices can do to our health, and these guys back it up with solid scientific evidence. Use it to get informed and make some smart decisions to protect yourself.

The second of three knifemaking books by Jim Hrisoulas. The first book "The Complete Bladesmith", is excellent for the beginner to intermediate forger. This second book is more in-depth, and written for those that need knowledge in the field that will not be found elsewhere. The book is for the intermediate student, to the advanced master of the blade. Again, Jim gives his expertise and knowledge openly to the practitioner, who wants to make knifemaking a serious part of life. For those interested in the production of swords, this book that has something to offer you. This volume covers all aspects of the bladesmithing trade, including the varied techniques and details which can forge, what would otherwise be a plain knife, into a working piece of art. Secrets, tips, tools, and techniques, are spelled out with the help of clear diagrams and explanations. Helpful compound tables, plus formulas for the manufacturing of flux, quenching, and etching mediums, are all included in this comrehensive volume. Jim also introduces the techniques for the creation of damascus steel in this volume. Those interested in the manufacture of damascus steel will also find a source of study, in Jims latest book, "The Pattern-Welded Blade", which is strictly for the advanced forger that desires to create damascus and mosaic patterens, and who has worked through Jims first two books. A worthy sequal to The Complete Bladesmith

This book is a great sequel to The Complete Bladesmith, one of the best works I've read on the subject. It is well written and full of sound, practical information for the experienced bladesmith, including everything from laying out your shop (e.g., lighting, ventilation, tools) to building and using a forge to make battle-worthy blades and works of anachronistic art. Contents include essential information about steels and alloys, compounds and formulas, and weights and measures that you need to successfully complete projects, along with advanced forging techniques, power hammer applications, grinding, heat treating, tempering, hilts, metal and wood finishing, leatherworking and scabbard making, damascus steel (pattern-welding), sword making, spear making, and ax making. There are also excellent chapter on Japanese nonferrous alloys. Mr. Hrisoulas's blade crafting skills are first rate and his writing talents readily convey his knowledge and experience in a way that you can immediately apply to your own work. Very well done.

Excellent book, Jim Hrisoulas tells you how to do things PROPERLY, not half @$$ed. He inspired me to start my own blacksmith shop, along with a few other books, for the prices you can get this book, it has incredible artwork along with a contact list for all of the artists, emails, phone numbers, etc. They welcome questions as this is a fairly rare craft nowadays.
