About the Author
Michele Wong McSween is a mom, fashion designer, author and a fourth generation Chinese American. She resides in Brooklyn, NY with her husband, three sons, and French Bulldog. McSween holds degrees from University of California at Berkeley and the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. Growing up in Sacramento, CA, she never learned Chinese and wanted to be sure her own boys were confident with Chinese language and culture. After enrolling them in early-learning Mandarin classes, McSween looked for appropriate Mandarin bedtime reading and found that little was available. She created Gordon & Li Li with an appealing, simple and modern design aesthetic that would engage kids and parents alike.

A great introduction to everyday Mandarin

My 2 year-old loves this book! He's been watching Ni Hao, Kai Lan and was really excited to expand his Mandarin vocabulary. He has about 10 words now and is using them interchangeably with English; it's been wonderful to see his functional language expand!

My only complaint is that you really do need to know how to read Pinyin to get anything out of this book, but since Pinyin is really not too difficult, it's worth it if you want to introduce your child to Mandarin.

aged 3 and 1 love to look through it everyday

The pictures are very cute and the words are in English, pinyin, a "sound out" version of pin yin, and the Chinese character, simplified. My sons, aged 3 and 1 love to look through it everyday. I like it so much I plan to give it to friends and family with kids who are interested in learning Mandarin.

Great first book!

I purchased this book to help my son learn Mandarin. It's definitely a great book if you already speak Mandarin and want to teach it to your children. It may be a little difficult if you don't speak Mandarin.
My son enjoys the pictures in it as well.

In Part II the author uses these results to study representations with geometry on Grassmannians and flag manifolds, including their Schubert subvarieties, and the related Schubert polynomials. Much of this material has never before appeared in book form. There are numerous exercises throughout, with hints and answers provided. Researchers in representation theory and algebraic geometry as well as in combinatorics will find this book interesting and useful, while students will find the intuitive presentation easy to follow.

Young tableaux are fillings of the boxes of diagrams that correspond to partitions with positive integers, that are strictly increasing down columns and weakly increasing along rows. The aim of this book is to develop the combinatorics of Young tableaux and to show them in action in the algebra of symmetric functions, the representations of the symmetric and general linear groups, and the geometry of flag varieties. Many of these applications have not been available in book form.

A Fine Synthesis of Combinatorics, Geometry, and Algebra

With his usual lucidity, Fulton brings together the surprisingly wide area of mathematics concerned with Young tableaux. These are combinatorial patterns which index basis vectors of group representations (either of the symmetric group or the general linear group). These vectors can be seen as Plucker coordinate functions on non-linear representations, namely homogeneous spaces (Grassmannians and flag varieties). Thus, Young tableaux form an invaluable tool to examine these representations and varieties in concrete detail. Fulton also gives a good exposition of the combinatorial operations on tableaux which reflect the crystal basis structure from quantum GL(n), though Fulton does not explicitly discuss quantum groups. Other good expositions of these topics, from a more algebraic and combinatorial point of view, are Sagan's newly revised "The Symmetric Group", and Stanley's "Enumerative Combinatorics", Vol 2.

The worst textbook ever!

I have been using this book for three months now because I am required to. The worst book ever in terms of how things are written down. It has so many typographical errors. And the explanation and examples are minimal for the different statistical tests. The internet and wikipedia explain things better than this book. I didn't buy this book on Amazon, I got it from the university websites. It's a waste of $140-$150 bucks or whatever you paid for it. I cannot use this book without having to google things.

I will probably write more details about the errors and inadequate explanations and provide examples, once I finish my final exam.

maybe its the level I am that doesn't require such comprehensive knowledge; but even if that was the case I think its still a hard read. Its not really simplistic enough or visually appealing.

Courage on ice

This is a remarkable account of a woman's solo journey on foot (skis) across the arctic wastes, constantly menaced by polar bears, extreme cold and dangerous ice underfoot. A great adventure. I was even more amazed by the epilogue, in which she mentions going back over the same terrain years later with her husband, as well as other crazy adventures, of which I would have liked to have read about those as well.

An Adventure from a Frozen Place which Warms your Heart.

I always love reading Helen Thayer's books; reading of the adventures and challenges she takes on and the way she views the animals and her great respect for the places she travels in. I didn't enjoy this book quite as much as "Three Among Te Wolves", only because for obvious reasons she couldn't get so close to the polar bears as she did to the wolves, so we missed out on her close up observations of the wild animals she met on her journey.

However this book did give the reader a wonderful insight into how she managed her emotions such as the fear experienced walking through polar bear country. It was inspirational to read about her way of accepting the conditions she couldn't change and changing her mindset in order to become positively motivated and therefore ensure her survival. One could certainly remember this when struggling with any sort of hardship in life.

Charlie, her dog, was a star, of course. Helen has a great knack of placing the ones she travels with ahead of herself in her tales.

If you are an animal lover and love reading about true adventures and grueling challenges of the body and spirit this is the book for you.

This short book reads like you are sitting down (at the bar) with a person that has been through the struggle of a YouTube channel. The definitions are laid out and a good idea of how to go about things are present. The book is a great spot for research for the person that knows nothing about this part of YouTube.

You need to take this class but avoid this textbook

This textbook is poorly written, has a multiple mistakes and worse yet makes my professor lazy, here's how:
I'm using this book for my women's health class but I have serious reservations about this text.
1- my professor literally just re-posts boring gray power points that the publisher obviously provided (the same errors in the text are repeated in the power points)
2- the text is searchable and therefore the questions that the publisher has provided her are easily answered by doing simple searches.
3- The same statistics are repeated over and over again throughout each chapter. If I did this much paraphrasing in my graduate course I would be cited for plagiarism.
A note to Author: the profiles in extraordinary women are written in a tone that acts like each of the women profiled faced extreme struggles, persecution or made huge accomplishments, regardless of who is profiled. It's very possible to be extraordinary without being made out as being persecuted. Change the tone of the profiles based on the individuals and their unique accomplishments or contributions to the feminist movement.

About the Author
Award winning motoring correspondent of The Sunday Times for thirteen years until 1995, author Eric Dymock trained as an engineer in Glasgow, worked in the motor trade, wrote about cars for local newspapers, and joined the road test staff of The Motor in 1962. From 1965 to 1982 he covered grand prix motor racing for The Guardian, and later The Observer.Motoring correspondent of Town (Haymarket) 1966-1968, News of the World 1973-1975, and The Observer 1980-1983, he was motoring editor of Sunday magazine 1982-1985 and Road and Car 1983-1986. He was UK correspondent for Autovisie (Holland) and magazines in Italy and Spain. His books include a biography of Jackie Stewart, The Guinness Guide to Grand Prix Motor Racing, Post-war Sports Cars, The Sprites and Midgets, and definitive histories of BMW, Saab, Rover, and Honda in the UK.Eric Dymock wrote and researched television motoring programmes for BBC2, Thames TV, and the Australian Broadcasting Commission, and was a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4 Going Places. He set up Dove Publishing with Ruth Dymock in 1990. He won The Jim Clark Memorial Award in 2004, and was awarded the President's Trophy by The Association of Scottish Motoring Writers in 2014.

Great book about the legendary racing driver Jim Clark

As a Jim Clark fan from his early days, when he was a rookie in Formula 1 in 1961 (remember Phil Hill winning the championship that year?) I wanted to get this book for some time. However, the prices for hard copies were so astronomical that I couldn't contemplate it, until the Kindle edition came out at $9.99. What a blessing. Great book, it turned out to be.

Modern fans probably don't realize what a master Jim Clark was. Google his name to see his performance at the Indy 500 from 1963 to 1066, in addition to his amazing percentage of wins and pole positions.

Good place to start

This book is a good starter book, it has several starter knit designs to incorporate in your own project. I used lion brand tweed stripes yarn and the knit set up using double stockinette stitch from this book to make a nice scarf quickly.

excellent guide

This book gives very clear directions for using a long loom. It has made it possible for me to help some people with disabilities to learn to use the long loom. I think that the long loom is easier for some people to use than the circular loom, once the threading process has been learned. The clear and detailed photographs are key to setting up the long loom, learning to use it. I am most grateful to the author and publisher for this book. Thank you.

A must for every loom knitter !

I bought this book because I misplaced my original book that I had, so this is a replacement. This book is very detailed and it shows you how to loom knit on long looms, how to start and what stitches are what and how to make those stitches, the only flaw is does not teach you how to remove or end a project. That you can do online, if you do some research. This is a must for every loom knitter no matter what stage you are. Great reference book!

I've used both Stewart's Calculus and Thomas'. Interestingly, Thomas has been writing calculus books for a LONG time and i've picked up several editions in the used book stores, because from the first time i bought a Thomas calc book back in Jr. High for my own self interest, i was a fan of his style.
His style is that of the old-school American text book authors who wrote in a clear, concise manner of English, using tangible and visual examples. Those old writers still thought of much of the material as novel, and were appealing to a more agrarian society of students.. especially the young and booming field of engineers. This is lacking in today's texts. The only drawback is that some old texts are much too impersonal and use the passive voice for everything, which can make them very difficult to read at times.
Thomas' recent editions (at least - i can not recall for the 60's era editions) are not only formally clear, but easy to understand and read. Here are the ways in which Thomas' book beats Stewart's book:
1) His explanations are accompanied by better graphics. Thomas uses more graphics to show each example and derivation. He uses MULTIPLE frames of graphics for one example, instead of just a single graphic. This makes following his train of thought much easier.. it's almost like watching a video.
2) His writing style is more complete. He leaves out fewer ideas than Stewart. Sometimes Stewart, like most authors, forgets to mention what exactly he is thinking and the reader is left trying to figure out his train of thought.
3) Thomas guides the reader through more (graphical) derivation of concepts. Sometimes, you will find derivations which Stewart relegates to problems for the reader (don't you hate that!?), are actually shown visually by Thomas!
Thomas' book is in fact probably the best calculus textbook around. I've looked at many many of them, and fraknly, none of them are this complete and well developed... The funny thing is, Thomas' book was one of the best decades ago. It has only gotten more exhaustive and more mature!
You should have this book in your reference library at least. You are more likely to find illustrative discussion on any particular introductory calculus subject in this book than you are in other books.

I had edition 6e for cal 1 and recently purchased this edition
for cal 2. This version is much better. People who already know
calculus tell me how great edition 6e is, but the problem is that
this textbook is intended for 18-20 year olds(for the most part)
who are only being exposed to calculus for their first or second
time. 6e examples skip alot of algebraic manipulations which
can have you struggling for days, only to find out that you missed
something basic, the 12th edition fixed alot of those problems. Also in
6e the excerises at the end of the chapters will have a few equations and
then kill you with word problems,this is a problem for me because I consider
myself a mathlete and I enjoy solving equations. I understand they want you to be able to analyze and not just go through the steps, but at least put some equations in there. To sum up,the 12th edition is way more user/beginner friendly than 6e.

An Excellent Text

I used this book through three semesters of Calculus and feel like it was very understandable and taught me a great deal. It can definitely feel dry at times but it's not meant to entertain you anyway. The examples were clear and built you up to the tougher exercises. It's worth every dollar spent and I'm confident you could get through calculus courses without a professor by self teaching yourself with Thomas.
