The paintings were beautiful and really made an impression on me

I just finished viewing this exhibition at the Getty Center and was very impressed. The paintings were beautiful and really affected me. I figured I'd check out the official book but was extremely disappointed as I flipped through it. The reproductions are just not good at all. Some of the best paintings in the show look completely different in this book. They're flat and dull and lifeless when the actual paintings are colorful and full of contrast and drama. It was really, really disappointing. I'm not sure if any of the other books on Turner are any better as I haven't had a chance to look at any physical copies, but I hope so, because I'd really like to be able to study reproductions of his paintings again in the future.

Went through the book at deYoung. Turner's painting is monumental. The book is of good size and the pictures are small and even tiny at times. Reproduction is poor. There is more emphasis on what is to be said about Turner than on the painting. Boo. I did not choose to purchase.

There is no spoon

This is a great read and I believe it should be introduced into the education curriculum. Throughout our history we have a bundle of myths and fallacies that get ingrained into our thinking as truths. They are not truths - they are lies and deceptions. Framespotting is a fantastic approach to taking a look at the world around you, and asks you 'how do you see this?' in wonderfully subtle fashions. Halfway through this very short read I began to feel hope again, I began to feel that if everyone read this book and we incorporated a shift in our local, social, global languages that it is possible for human kind to began actively building and creating a future. Our present direction has limited futures. A shift in this paradigm will enable future as an outcome, rather than an idealized fantasy.
Read this book!!!! Everyone just read this book! You do matter and what you act on can literally change the world.

Brilliant

The human mind is full of mysteries and its main function is to enable us make decisions. These decisions are facilitated through the mind’s ability to ‘unpack’ or ‘re-pack’ the reality to a level where we are comfortably in a position to give a verdict of ‘wrong and right’. If we face something lying in ‘grey areas’, our mind will try to break it to a level where we can convincingly apply the notion of ‘black or white’ to it. On the other hand, if a clear reality (especially the one we don’t want to face) look straight into our eyes, we will take refuge in taking a broader view until it is in the ‘grey’ zone. When we create our realities after such a process, it is natural that we would be protective of them and would want to cling to them. Consequently, we all feel highly discomforted if someone attempts to threaten our realities by unpacking or repacking them to a different level – the root cause of many problems humanity faces or faced.

‘Framespotting’ is a brilliant attempt to show this trait and help us identify its manifestations and extent. The book is a masterpiece of simplicity, which is a testimony to the mastery of its authors on the subject. Those who read it can see the encompassing effects and I found them beyond description.

Perfect Starting Point for Buying and Renting

First, if you're looking for a book about flipping houses this probably isn't the right one for you. It may have some useful tips, but this for someone who wants to get into real estate for the long haul (i.e. purchasing and renting). But if you're looking for an idea of how to get started in real estate and have long term, sustainable income this book is for you.

I'm just getting started in this industry, and I was looking for a book that gave me an idea of what the process looks like start to finish, and what to expect entering the property management arena. I have read Rich Dad, Poor Dad and I really liked it, so I figured this was a good option to start with. I'm glad I did because this is exactly what I was looking for in a property investment book!

Entry level, high level over view of the entire process from looking for a property to things to be aware of and making offers. If you're experienced in real estate you probably won't get much from it other than maybe setting goals and how to value a property, but that may depend your time in the industry and what you specialize in (consumer purchases vs investment properties). Any way you look at it this book is a quick read and good starting point for anyone looking to get into the real estate investment scene.

Great read for aspiring real-estate investors

This book brings you from the ground up in regards to real-estate investing. Mr. McElroy utilizes insightful examples and real world knowledge to produce a solid knowledge base for the readers. The book brings out the importance of setting goals up front, and executing your goals through a systematic process that feels very prescriptive (which can be good and bad in some circumstances). I have yet to become financially free on the prescribed fundamentals that he outlines in the book but the book will most definitely give you a basic knowledge of setting goals, building your real-estate team, finding your market and submarket (if necessary), evaluating property, buying property, managing property, and selling property. Very thorough, a must have for anyone that has a desire to effectively make the bottom dollar in the real-estate market.

Useful but avoided one key concept

Although the details on managing the property are sound, there is a lack of information of acquiring and most importantly, it does not go into the most pivotal component for someone starting out: If you have thousands of dollars of upfront costs (due diligence) prior to acquiring a property and then you decide that it is not a good deal then you are out those thousands. If you rinse and repeat this process on a few properties and they are also a no go, that can be all of your savings (and if you are starting out with 0.00 then this scenario is even more daunting). It would have been nice for Ken to go into this component and how he overcame this issue.

A prequel that was just as amazing as the rest of the O'Conner books!

For those not familiar with this family saga be forewarned I do talk about which man Marcy chooses!

After adoring the O'Conner family in the Daughters of Boston and Winds of Change series I was extremely excited to read this prequel about the O'Conner parents! And oh what a book it was! I loved it like I've loved every other one of Julie's books I've read. This author has such an amazing talent and once again played with my emotions. It was such fun seeing a younger Marcy and Patrick and watching their journey to love that we'd gotten hints of in the other stories. On one hand knowing how the story would end up made it easier to read and on the other hand it made it more painful. It was painful to watch all the turmoil they had to go through and watching Marcy almost end up with Sam when you knew how amazing her life was going to be with Patrick. I would get so frustrated during the scenes Marcy and Sam were together and then get a dopey grin on my face whenever she was with Patrick. I loved watching as his love for Marcy transformed Patrick into the amazing hero I knew and loved and brought him close to God. I also loved Marcy and her close relationship with God and how that kept her from making the wrong choices! Oh and I can't write this review without mention how much I loved Patrick's interaction with the kids especially Tillie. It was just so stinkin' cute! I could go on for days on how much I loved this book but I better end it so I can go reread the rest of the O'Conner saga!

How many hours of my life I'll never get back??

I have to agree with another reviewer that Marcy WAS a dope! Throughout the whole book she wants one man pretty much just because she loved his large family. And for all her professed faith in God, when did she ever pray to God to ask who she should trust, who she should be with? She got mad at the people who tried to tell her the truth and never tried to discover it for herself. Why couldn't she go to the bar and find out the truth for herself? Probably because she had no spine and liked living in the dark.

Truth be told, the only reason I read this book was because it was $.99 and I thought it was supposed to be a novella. It SHOULD have been, because it just dragged on and on to the point where I was skipping whole chapters just to read the dialogue. After reading several of her other books, I had no desire to read the same tired plots and stupid faithless men who care more about sex than anything else, but I thought it would be a good Christmas read. It wasn't. It barely even talked about Christmas, mostly taking place six months before and up to Christmas (and by the way, who starts rehearsing for a play six months in advance??? They sure didn't do that in any plays I've ever been in!).

Overall, it was the same Lessman plot garbage as always. I think she only knows how to write two character types: the holy one and the scoundrel. And most of the wording she uses sounds like she took a bad writing class about how to make your verbs sound more expressive. "Pinged" a rock, "buffed" their arms, "Southie's most notorious rogue/Lothario"--yada, yada, yada. It got really old. As much as I wanted to give her another chance, I won't. This book was lousy and I don't know why I even finished it. I really wonder if all the glowing reviews were just written by people who were asked to write them. Don't buy it; I always read the negative reviews first and this time they're spot-on.

A Light in the Window/reviewing the sample

This author is likely trying to bring "50 Shades of Gray" into her so-called Christian Fiction genre which to me is an oxymoron. She has gotten it that sex sells in the market. The Bible, however, warns against such things calling it fleshly and worldliness. Married intimacy is very beautiful in the confines of marriage and even though Lessman marries off her sin-soaked characters in a twisted fashion, she throws in a lot of premarital activity which is condemned by the Lord. This author needs to get out of the Christian Fiction category and go headlong into the world or repent and start writing books that edify her readers and not leave them feeling like needing a shower with a strong soap. I, for one, am giving up on her books and sticking with the Book of Truth. I will sleep better.
