When the prolific British painter Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) died at the age of 76, his contemporaries held a generally negative view of his recent work, describing it as indulgent, eccentric, and even repulsive. The paintings were beautiful and really made an impression on me

I just finished viewing this exhibition at the Getty Center and was very impressed. The paintings were beautiful and really affected me. I figured I'd check out the official book but was extremely disappointed as I flipped through it. The reproductions are just not good at all. Some of the best paintings in the show look completely different in this book. They're flat and dull and lifeless when the actual paintings are colorful and full of contrast and drama. It was really, really disappointing. I'm not sure if any of the other books on Turner are any better as I haven't had a chance to look at any physical copies, but I hope so, because I'd really like to be able to study reproductions of his paintings again in the future.

small pictures on large pages.

Went through the book at deYoung. Turner's painting is monumental. The book is of good size and the pictures are small and even tiny at times. Reproduction is poor. There is more emphasis on what is to be said about Turner than on the painting. Boo. I did not choose to purchase.
