Joy Hakim, a former teacher, editor, and writer won the prestigious James Michener Prize for her series, A History of US, which has sold over 4 million copies nationwide. The book is not anything like the concise versions by Joy Hakim, that the brick and mortar schools use. This book is very thin and skimpy. My teens are in late middle school/ high school and it looks written for elementary students.However, I haven't bought the whole set, because I wanted to see for myself first. I like Joy's style of telling a story and agree with most of her opinions on things.If you don't like history being told like a story with author's opinions and you don't mind a shorter version of the concise series, then this book is for you.

About the Author
His dad first introduced him to computer gaming on the Commodore 64, and since Anthony was 15, he has loved rock music and played guitar. But as most people know, being a musician is a tough job, and he just never kept with it enough to make anything out of it.

In his early 20s Anthony found himself eventually living in his car, with no real direction. He decided the music stuff wouldn’t work out, so he would try the video game industry instead. This is when he attended college to pursue his education in programming. Anthony didn’t know the first thing about making games but figured that he had to start somewhere. Once he started, he met people who attended art classes and were drawing. This is when he was introduced to concept art. His life changed after that and he decided to pursue art as his segue into video games.

Anthony spent the first year of his college life drawing almost 16 hours a day. He was not an artist, but he was committed to becoming one. He practiced everything and looked at everything with an objective and non-biased opinion on what “art” should be. Also, the Internet was around for him to exploit and use as another tool to learn and educate himself. He did everything he could possibly think of to improve his skills: attending classes, workshops, and events.

Five years later Anthony is now an accomplished artist and teacher. He has worked for Sony Santa Monica, Wizards of the Coast, Cryptozoic, Hasbro, Green Dot Films, and many more studios. He has taught at Red Engine Studios, Schoolism, Otis School of Design, and Laguna College of Art Design. He has found that teaching is something he has really come to love. So this book is not only a showcase of the things he loves to draw, but also the process of them.

I can't believe you went ahead and started selling the book in amazon, design studio and other places... while the backers who backed your project and gave you over $50,000 have gotten jack squat...

That's pretty weak and there's no excuse for that other than you showing some snake colors. Please be a man and send the f???? Ing books to your backers.

Michael Mallory is a Los Angeles–based writer, journalist, and film-and-animation historian. He is the author of many nonfiction books on pop culture, including The Art of Krampus, Hanna-Barbera Cartoons, Marvel: The Characters and Their Universe, X-Men: The Characters and Their Universe, Marvel: The Expanding Universe Wall Chart, Universal Studios Monsters: A Legacy of Horror, and Iwao Takamoto: My Life with a Thousand Characters, which he co-wrote with animation legend Iwao Takamoto. In addition, he has written nearly 600 newspaper, magazine and online articles for the Los Angeles Times, Variety, and Animation Magazine. He lives in Los Angeles.

The Art of Krampus

I am a fan of director Michael Dougherty, whose last film "Trick 'r Treat" was immaculately designed - and it looks like he has done it again here because the film looks great.

The book "The Art of Krampus" allows fans to delve into the designs of the film. Inside you'll find wonderfully creepy designs of holiday icons - including snowmen, elves, and gingerbread men. It's fascinating to see something so innocent - such as a teddy bear - turned into something evil and quite scary. Then there's Krampus himself: the book discusses all aspects of the character (including casting an actor to inhabit the role; and designing his look and costume). Because Krampus is well-known in European mythology, the character already had certain defining characteristics (the horns, for example). But the filmmakers also had freedom to make their Krampus slightly unique and specific to their story. I love the final look of the character in the film, but it's also fascinating to see early concept art and variations of the character in this book.

Author Michael Mallory chronicles the entire journey of the film - script development and design work all the way through shooting and scoring. It was interesting to read about the challenges of filming and trying to capture as much in-camera as they could. The film utilizes practical effects, makeup, and puppetry whenever possible - digital effects were a last resort for things that could not be achieved another way. Given the quality of work on display, I wasn't surprised to learn that Weta Workshop was responsible for much of it. Weta is the best in the business, and the book shows the complexity of the animatronics and makeup effects used to bring the characters to life.

The book is full of imagery - this includes conceptual artwork and character sketches; storyboards of key sequences; and behind the scenes photos from the set and the creature shop. Photos are high-quality and the overall layout of the book is very pleasing. It all comes together to make "The Art of Krampus" a very interesting read for what is a compelling movie from a visionary filmmaker.

A perfect gift for my artist daughter!

My daughter is a conceptual artist and loves books like this one. The movie was excellent so it was interesting to see how the scenes, characters, and especially the monsters developed from idea to screen. A very nice book with beautiful heavy pages and sharp images. Well worth the money, if you love film art or horror flicks!

Adorable!!

I love children's books by Bill Martin and Eric Carle. I really love reading "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" and "Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?" to my preschoolers and when I heard there was a new book, I had to find a copy and buy it. I can't wait to read this book to my class along with the other two books. It is soooo adorable! The pictures are cute and easy for the children to remember.

Great Companion to a Classic

This book is similar to the original Brown Bear book, with illustrations of panda bear, bald eagle, water buffalo, spider monkey, green sea turtle, macaroni penguin, sea lion, red wolf, whooping crane, black panther, and moon-faced dreaming child.

The illustrations are beautiful--Carle's signature watercolor-collage style. While Brown Bear's illustrations show each animal against stark white backgrounds, Panda Bear's illustrations feature them against bold backgrounds. (My sensitive younger toddler found the red wolf and the black panther illustrations a little scary, so we skip those pages for now.)

Although this book doesn't lend itself to teaching basic colors and animal sounds the way that the original does, it is a good way to teach the concept of endangered species to younger children. Overall, a great companion to a classic!

Not quite as captivating as Brown, Bear

It's a nice concept and most kids will love the words, different animals and the concept of going from one animal to another. Panda Bear was really written because Brown Bear established such a terrific template. In other words it's a sequel. Like most sequels it doesn't quite measure up.
Kids will still enjoy the colorful pictures, sounds of words and guessing what comes next in the story. Perhaps that's all they need. Sometimes the educational aspect is important and sometimes kids just need entertainment. This is entertaining for little ones and it's a simple enough story so that little ones can start pretending to read and feel more grown up.

The source book for many that followed

This book, published in 1962, is the basic source for all books that have followed it. However, I would only recommend it to someone who is specializing in this area of study. I found the book to be very comprehensive, perhaps too comprehensive in that is cites and discusses almost everything in Herodotus, requiring the reader to wade through a tremendous amount of information in order to understand the narrative. I felt that it was a case of the overall forest being obscured by too much attention to individual trees. Also, I found that the writing style was too much influenced by that of the 19th century for my taste. The writing is sometimes stilted and convoluted, with a mention or every possible individual who was involved with an event. Furthermore it uses a transliteration from the Greek that is different from that used in more modern texts, and this can be confusing. The book contains 15 useful maps, but no illustrations.

I would recommend Green’s “The Greco-Persian Wars” as a book that I found that was much more accessible and clearly written. It leans heavily on “Persia and the Greeks”, but having been written more than 40 years later incorporates the work of more modern historians (although the basis information still relies on material written 2500 years ago) and is written using a more modern style. I did not dislike “Persia and the Greeks”, only that I feel that it is not the best choice for someone who is not a specialist in the area of early Greek and Persian history.

Excellent Resource

I gift this book to students of improv frequently. As a person who teaches 2 different improv courses (at the high school level) and has run a high school improv troupe for the last 12+ years I can honestly say this book is helpful. Whether you are an experienced coach who is looking for some fresh perspective or a person who is just getting started coaching this book will certainly help make your coaching stronger and by extension your improv team. The only negative I can say is not about the book. $500+ for a book that runs $18 elsewhere is ridiculous. Shame on whoever posted that price.

Recommended Reading for Every Improviser

An easy read and great for anyone looking to teach improv, direct it, or just get better at it themselves. One of my favorite aspects of the book are the exercises Asaf shows you and how and when to use them to fix specific improviser issues. The book also has great improv quotes scattered throughout that I found very inspiring. I recommend this book to everyone who is doing improv, even if you aren't teaching it, you should see it from this point of view.

About the Author

MICKEY TRESCOTT, NTP, is a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, chef, blogger, and author of The Autoimmune Paleo Cookbook. She is the creator of AIP Batch Cook, a video-based cooking program that teaches users how to prepare allergen-free meals in their own home. She teaches cooking classes online and at seminars around the country, as well as at Bastyr University. How-to for AIP (or any chronic illness and other things like life)

I think this book is fantastic! and am only giving 4 stars because of these few, somewhat petty irks...
As another reviewer wrote, The pumpkin and butternut squash are missing from the week 2 shopping list. I write a lot of notes in my cookbooks and the paper this is printed on isn't great for that. So if you take notes, expect a messy book or test an ink pen in the back first. Also, I wish this wasn't pigeonholed to "autoimmune" as these are the steps that anyone with chronic illness might want to follow, and are really just a strong solid foundation for anyone to have good health.

Other than that, I am finding this to be an excellent step by step workbook. Perhaps because my brain puts information in as the order it was written by the authors, or they just made it accessible. I have the mothership book by Sarah Ballantyne, The Paleo Approach, that the authors of AWH referenced for their book. This book puts the textbook-like writing of Dr. Ballantyne's into an approachable step by step... at least I think so, I have some serious mental fog so keep that in mind, ha!

I can tell that it is well thought out as I have to retrace things many times to process and this book is fluid for me, which I need right now. I get the why but stumbled putting together the how. I also love that it starts with sleep and meditation. So many well meaning people start with a big push on the movement, really not understanding that it can take all day to make a pot of soup when you are ill. Which brings up something else about this book I appreciated: the cooking wasn't overwhelming, but I couldn't have started without a hand that first week. My stamina has been improving since then (probably because of the "permission" to rest, be still and silent). When I add in the local market that has online ordering that can be picked up by anyone (which saves days when I consider all it takes to get there, shop, home, put away and then recover for a day or three) and I don't have to wait for the delivery window and delivery person in the house. {side note: I can't manage a butternut squash yet, some days carrots are a lot, so I do have bags of frozen on hand instead (it saves a lot of kitchen & recovery time). Seems like 2 10oz bags of frozen butternut equal one fresh and a bag of sliced carrots is usually what goes well in soups, stews, and the like. Also, I look for any kale, chard, etc. already washed and prepped. It's worth the extra pocket change to spare the kitchen time; I had to let go over my penny-pinching tendencies}

The recipes are good and the portions are generous. We eased in the first week and just did the meal plan as written (which is for 1 person) With my husband eating leftovers from the week before and transitioning the last of our fresh produce, we had plenty of food for the 2 of us. I have a lot of nausea and I found the meals easy on my gut and I can always manage to eat at least 1/2 because they smell so tantalizing. Having leftovers planned in the meal plan is perfect! Thank you for not turning leftovers into something else and having to basically recook something. So many meal plans try to make things glamorous and I simply need fast, easy, clean, and tasty. That they freeze well and say how long they keep is great! I don't have to watch my husband play leftover roulette trying to remember when he made something (I don't participate in this bizarre game of his.) Also, I sort of blew up our oven like a Molotov cocktail and have been using an Instapot instead of baking the recipes. I find a similar recipe in an instapot cookbook and just adapt the time and pressure to the AWH recipes (then make a messy note of it in the book for next time). Any liquid gets simmered down into a sauce. I'm looking forward to trying these in an oven when it is back online.

I'm honestly surprised that I was able to take a shower from start to finish, drying hair, the full gig, without feeling like I was going to pass out for the first time in over a year. I'm so skeptical and jaded after giving so many promises a go but it has only been a few weeks and that's a big shift. I'm also not feeling exhausted today after such a wild ride that most people don't give thought to every morning. I'm looking forward to making exciting progress, like a shower and checking the mail in the same day... maybe a walk around a park (to dream!). Snark aside, I am very appreciative to the authors for putting together the workbook that I needed and getting me started when I wasn't able to think and plan.

This book is a must have for anyone trying to find "wellness" while living with an autoimmune disease like Crohn's, celiac, Hashimoto's, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or any of the 100+ other known or suspected conditions that occur when the body's own immune system is triggered to turn against itself. Being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and then navigating the medical system of treatment is a confusing process, but this book provides a comprehensive resource that helps you build a collaborative care team that may include both conventional and alternative providers and implement DIY lifestyle changes that will truly make a difference.

I particularly like that the authors do not claim to have a magic solution that would work for everyone, but instead guide the reader through a series of steps that help each person create a personalized plan for wellness that will continue to evolve and refine over time. Diet is a significant part of that plan and often the element of lifestyle change that causes the most angst for people who undertake it. With Angie and Mickey coaching you though, it is not hard at all. The book includes 30 autoimmune protocol elimination phase (AIP) recipes, all of them easy to make and requiring no unusual or expensive ingredients, and a four week meal plan with shopping lists. I think this book would be worth the purchase price alone for just this section, but you also get so much more, including support and encouragement that you just can't put a dollar figure on.

The Autoimmune Wellness Handbook could not have arrived at a better time. Recently diagnosed with Hashimoto's and just beginning my Autoimmune Protocol journey this handbook will be the perfect guide. I appreciate the reassurance throughout the book and the warning that it must be tailored to fit your needs. The recipes in the book are priceless and greatly appreciated. The personal stories make the book even more relatable. This is a tool everyone with any Autoimmune disease should own!
