PAPERBACK!!!

I recently purchased this book for my modern physics course and it is a well written book. However, for some reason the publisher has sent out very poor copies of the book that are paperback and have the same ISBN number. Normally the paperback and hardcover have different ISBN's along with different prices. The copy that I purchased, along with the ones in the school bookstore and various other resellers are paperback and were printed on poor quality printers (the text is fuzzy and has many ink spots throughout the text). Just a warning to any stuents or professors who may be using this book in a course, please make certain that you are getting what you pay for.

This book is certainly not one that simply assumes a knowledge of classical physics. The text assumes (at the very least) an introductory knowledge of modern physics, as it quite liberally employs terms and concepts unbeknownst to most classical-physics entrepreneurs. As i consider myself to be one of these, this book, prior to my professor's lectures, was utterly useless. While the material contained in any modern physics text may be somewhat convoluded, this one in particular does the amateur classical physicist no service. However, a previously-accredited modern physicist can almost certainly gain a thorough review of many generalized modern physics concepts via this book.

Good intro to serious modern physics

This textbook assumes a knowledge in classical physics, and then proceeds to excellently cover topics in modern physics, including, relativity, quantum mechanics, solid state physics, nuclear physics and particle physics. It is a good choice for trying to acquire a knowledge of modern physics for the reader who has a good knowledge of classical physics (advanced high school program or first year University) but wants to move on.

Father, Son and Holy Spirit. There are only two possible conclusions one can come to after reading this book.
Jesus was either a raving lunatic or He is God!

About the Author
Tamara Jacka's primary research interests are in gender and rural/urban inequalities; and the interconnections between social change and individual experiences and agency. She has carried out field research in a number of sites in northern and central China. She is the author of four books: Women, Gender and Rural Development in China (co-edited with Sally Sargeson; Edward Elgar, 2011), Rural Women in Urban China: Gender, Migration and Social Change (M. E. Sharpe, 2006), On the Move: Women and Rural-to-Urban Migration in Contemporary China (co-edited with Arianne Gaetano; Columbia University Press, 2004) and Women's Work in Rural China: Change and Continuity in an Era of Reform (Cambridge University Press, 1997). Her book, Rural Women in Urban China, won the American Anthropological Association's Francis Hsu award for Best Book in East Asian Anthropology (2007). She is also a co-editor of the journal Critical Asian Studies and a member of the American Anthropological Association, the Association for Asian Studies, the Asian Studies Association of Australia and the Chinese Studies Association of Australia. She has over twelve years' experience of teaching undergraduate courses on Chinese society and politics, and supervises postgraduate students in Chinese studies, gender studies, anthropology and development studies.

Andrew B. Kipnis is the author of more than forty articles and three books on Chinese society - Governing Educational Desire: Culture, Politics and Schooling in China (University of Chicago Press, 2011), China and Postsocialist Anthropology: Theorizing Power and Society after Communism (Eastbridge, 2008) and Producing Guanxi: Sentiment, Self and Subculture in a North China Village (Duke University Press, 1997). He is also co-editor of The China Journal and a Fellow of the American Anthropological Association, the Australian Anthropological Society, The Association for Asian Studies and the Chinese Studies Association of Australia. He has taught courses on Chinese Culture and Society, Chinese Public Culture and Religions in China as well as courses on various sub-disciplines of anthropology. He has carried out field research in a number of sites in both rural and urban China.

Sally Sargeson's research explores how ordinary people contribute to the extraordinary changes occurring in China's countryside. She has published numerous journal articles and three books, Women, Gender and Rural Development in China (co-edited with Tamara Jacka, published by Edward Elgar, 2011), Collective Goods, Collective Futures in Asia (Routledge, 2002) and Reworking China's Proletariat (Macmillan, 1999). A member of the Association for Asian Studies, the Chinese Studies Association of Australia and the Australasian Political Studies Association, she has 14 years' experience of teaching Chinese Politics and Sociology in universities in Australia, UK and HK, has lectured widely in universities throughout China and has been a Visiting Professor at Peking University, Zhejiang University and the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences.

Accurate, comprehensive portrayal of contemporary China

I purchased this book partly because of my research interest, partly because it is the textbook of a class on contemporary China. I've got to say: I have got a lot from this book, become aware of so many things I didn't know, as a person who was born and raised in China. I particularly appreciate their approach of not framing China with some traditional dichotomies such as East vs. West, new vs. old, collectivism vs. individualism. It confidently departs from the stereotypes China often has and gives the readers a both holistic, objective portrayal. In addition, with some real examples, the themes they want to present are more vivid and substantial. I would highly recommend it to everyone, including Chinese people who want to know your country better.

Are you having reactions from certain products and can not figure out why?
Perhaps there is an ingredient that is the culprit. This book will help you identify what certain ingredients are used for in cosmetics, and in many cases, why a person could be allergic.
I think that it is a great resource, although I find that it tiptoes around some things - I guess the author did not want to start panics by sounding too doom and gloom.
However, enough information is in the book, and it is set up well enough to allow for you to get the information you need with the ease of a good dictionary. I would say it is a good reference to have.
I found it to be very interesting, enlightening, and helpful reading. If you are at all interested in what ingredients you are putting on your body, this book is a must have. You might be surprised at what they are made of and what else they will do to you!
