In the last 20 years laparoscopy has invaded and conquered all bastions of open surgery. It is the first time in the history of surgery that such drastic and sweeping changes have occurred in such a short period of time.� It is now inconceivable for any discipline of surgery not to offer the patient a minimally invasive approach.� Furthermore, laparoscopic surgery has become a major component in the teaching of surgical residents.� The times that surgeons and residents had to learn basic and advanced laparoscopic techniques through a weekend course are a thing of the past. It is now expected that surgeons in training will be exposed to laparoscopy through their residency or specialized fellowship programs.� �
The metamorphosis of surgical techniques has prompted a change in the surgical treatise.� Instead of the simple description of techniques with drawings, the addition of high definition digital videography enabled by laparoscopy has created a combined instructional format. The 2009 Atlas of Minimally Invasive Surgery was the first multimedia surgical textbook to be published; this video/text Atlas contains all the commonly performed laparoscopic procedures in one presentation.� The success of the 2009 Atlas prompted this 2012 "Video Atlas of Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery" which includes more complex and technically demanding procedures. Some of these procedures are rare or only performed in specialized centers, such as laparoscopic esophagectomy, laparoscopic pancreato-duodenectomy, laparoscopic bariatric revisional surgery, thoracoscopic pneumonectomy and others. Indeed these procedures are expected to be performed by very experienced laparoscopic surgeons; there are, however, a multitude of different techniques and procedures described in this Atlas that can be faced by most surgeons.� Such examples include cholecystectomy in the presence of cholecystistis, management of perforated peptic ulcer, small bowel resection, and repair of scrotal or parastomal hernias.�� Unlike the previous 2009 Atlas which is focused on general surgery, the present treatise includes other disciplines such as thoracic, gynecologic, urologic, and pediatric surgery.� In addition new approaches to minimally invasive surgery such as single port, natural orifice transluminal endoscopic, robotic, and microrobotic surgery are also described.� The Atlas combines the traditional illustrated textbook with edited and narrated DVD videos of 62 procedures.�
We have made every effort to include worldwide recognized authorities on each subject covered in the Atlas.� It is our hope that we managed to cover each topic in a concise yet informative layout and will contribute to the teaching of medical students, surgical residents, and surgeons.

About the Author
Dr. Frantzides is the Director of the Chicago Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery;Director of the Laparoscopic and Bariatric Fellowship Program at St. Francis Hospital and professor of surgery at University of Illinois in Chicago. He is recognized worldwide as an expert in the field of laparoscopic surgery and is a charter member of the United States Laparoscopic Founders Society.
His experience in laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgery is one of the most extensive in the United States. He has traveled internationally to perform and teach laparoscopic operations. In recognition of his efforts in teaching advanced laparoscopic techniques, he was named Honorary member of the Brazilian Society of Surgery (Colegio Brasileiro de Cirurgia Digestiva), the Hellenic Surgical Association, and the Greek Laparoscopic Society. During the last 19 years, he has organized 31 laparoscopic courses through which 331 surgeons were trained in laparoscopic surgery. He has created the first laparoscopic fellowship program in the United States (1995) for training young surgeons in the art of minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Frantzides is a member of numerous professional societies and has been the recipient of several awards and honors as well as grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and from the surgical industry. Dr. Frantzides has made more than 200 contributions to the medical literature and has written two books on laparoscopic surgery. He was the first in the world to introduce and perform 14 different laparoscopic procedures.
He developed a new safer technique for the laparoscopic gastric bypass ("Triple staple technique" Archives of Surgery, 2003.) Dr. Frantzides was the first surgeon to define and publish the importance of preserving the vagus nerve during a gastric bypass for avoidance of the dumping syndrome. Excellent!

This reference is exactly what I have been looking for. I am studying Parasitology, Genetics, Anatomy, Physiology and other subjects related to medicine. I have searched high and low for a good reference fro both Greek and Latin roots. This book has almost everything I have looked up. I highly recommend this to anyone else who is curious about etymology. Also, It works great for me (and probably other students) because I have an easier time remembering scientific words when I can translate the roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

Thorough, Concise, Terse & Pithy...

My involvement in biological systematics constantly brings me face to face with scientific terms. Most were crafted from Greek or Latin roots that usually reveal something about the organisms they reference. Though a student of both languages in the 1950's and 1960's, my vocabulary has never been great, so the need for a quick and easily accessed reference is ever present.

Lots of books claim to provide insights into the origins of scientific expressions. Many, if not most, fail miserably at the job. Either they are organized poorly, or they don't give good listings of the various English meanings associated with a given root. This book, however, is organized just as a dictionary should be. Moreover, the English definitions following each word and word form are both adequate and brief, without the fluff that so often confounds and complicates, yet with invaluable aids to parsing (e.g., prefix/suffix distinctions) thrown in. As a result, after investing only a few minutes using this dictionary to parse a scientific term and find the meanings of each component, I can usually determine what the term's originator meant it to convey. None of the other Greek/Latin dictionaries in my possession provide similar faculties.

Besides the main body of the text, Williams devotes several pages, at the back of the book, to the adjectival forms of common geographical names; a list of common terms for animals, plants, structures, activities and habitats; words related to sizes, colors, textures, patterns, numbers, quantity, direction and location, parts of the year, and chemical elements.

In summary, this book is all it is supposed to be and more. I highly recommend it.

THE combining form dictionary to buy.

I bought both this and Donald Borror's Dictionary and found that I truly preferred this. It appears to include everything in Borror's work with many additions and definitions which I found more helpful and interesting. For example, in Borror, Medusa is defined as a jellyfish, but in Williams it correctly identifies Medusa as a Gorgon (although this may be a chicken-egg conundrum.) Upgrades from the Borror work include the Greek forms in Greek plus more sources from languages other than Latin and Greek. The section on colors is far superior (Borror merely gives a color, let's say green, and then lists a few combining forms that mean green. Williams lists many words meaning green and gives concise definitions: smaragdinus - grass-green/emerald-green; a clear, pure green as opposed to venetus - deep sea-green; a dark green tending to dark grey.) Williams also includes a geographical list missing from Borror.

CAROLYNE BARRY: For the last 30 years, Carolyne has achieved recognition in front and behind the camera, as an actress, teacher, casting director, director and producer. The only book the industry newcomer will need!

Anoyne who has enjoyed even minor success in the entertainment industry will agree that a personal acting career is nothing short of running a business. Without creating a structured business plan, recognizing pitfalls before they occur, solidifying a method for obtaining both quantitative and qualitative results and developing a strategy for continually moving forward, the newcomer has already stacked the deck against their favor.

I am one of the lucky individuals who found Carolyne Barry early in my career. Her lessons not only helped me to cultivate a vastly successful commercial acting career, they also forced me to look at myself introspectively and find my own inspiration from within. The professional actor walks a treacherous road and Carolyne Barry's lessons have been best traveling mates that I've found.

The fact that her wisdom is now available in a single book is amazing! I happily and wholeheartedly recommend Carolyne Barry's book, "Hit The Ground Running." It belongs in every working actor's toolbox.

Devotion to Actors: She Cares.

This book is an invaluable resource for actors who want to WORK in the biz in LA... especially if you want to earn some good money doing commercials. I have taken classes from Carolyne Barry. I have experienced her books, cds, and online products. What I can say... my experience is that she deeply cares about her students and she is GREAT at what she does. I find that if a person really cares... if they really love their students, everything else falls into place. She cares. she cares enough to tell you the truth even if you don't want to hear it... because it will help you. She cares enough to spend an unbelievable amount of time improving the materials and courses that she gives the her students. if you haven't read her book or watched the videos on her [...] websites, check out those amazing resources! An absolute must!

I am an actor who has been in LA for just over a year now, and my only regret is that I didn't read Carolyne's book before I arrived. The valuable information she shares is essential to have a chance in this competitive industry. Not only does Carolyne provide specific, in-touch information (w/ a timeline) based on over 30 years of experience as a successful actress, coach and casting professional, but she helps inspire the reader to reflect and develop the personal tools needed for success as well. It's rare to see such a savvy, strategic business mind coupled with such creative, artistic talent. The book covers everything from classes, training, planning, pictures and packaging to budgeting, organization and time management. I would HIGHLY recommend reading this book if you're a serious actor looking for real success.

Father Vincent Capodanno Servant of God

This is an exceptional book about a very holy man, a priest tending to the spiritual needs of his Marines in Vietnam. Before I begin let me say that nothing in this world happens without God's knowledge, direction, order or God letting it happen for a reason. We all have free will but if God does not want it to happen it does not happen. Yes, there is such a thing as probability and outcome but it is up to God. In God's plan we are not God. We only report for duty to carry out His plan. God has a mission for all of us to do before we are called home to heaven. Having said that let me say that "The Grunt Padre" by Father Daniel Mode a fellow priest provides a revealing picture of a holy priest who went about doing God's work. The facts are that Father Vincent Robert Capodanno; Servant of God was a witness to God's goodness and love from February 13, 1929 to September 4, 1967. In the last few years he was a United States Navy Roman Catholic Chaplain in Vietnam and for his actions in the war was posthumous recipient of America's highest military decoration the Medal of Honor. Navy Chaplain Capodanno was killed in Vietnam in l967 when he accompanied a Marine search unit in operation swift. The Marines were outnumbered 2500 to 500 marines. Father Capodanno was killed while protecting a corpsman that was administering first aid to a wounded Marine. Father Capodanno even though wounded refused to leave battle area to assist his Marines. For his actions Padre Capodanno received posthumously the Congressional Medal of Honor. He was also awarded for other actions while in Vietnam, the Bronze star and 3 purple hearts. Father Capodanno was the most recognized and respected chaplain in the Vietnam War. Memorials and buildings have been constructed throughout the world that bears his name. He was truly a servant of God and a real hero. This brings to mind from Holy Scripture: "No greater love hath no man than to lay down one’s life for his friends."------ John 15: 13

The book "The Grunt Padre" covers all aspects of his life from early childhood to the calling from God to the vocation of becoming a priest. The sacrifices he made all his life to reach his goals. One crucial character trait was the thinking of others. He always went out of his way to help others; this priest has touched many people who knew him or knew of him here on earth. Some miracles have been reported through the intercession of Blessed Father Vincent Capodanno. A movement is in the works for the church to declare him a saint. But this does not happen overnight for a thorough investigation must be accomplish. This could take years. Meanwhile the cause of sainthood goes forward and the following prayer can be used to promote his cause:

Prayer for the Canonization of the Servant of God Father Vincent Capodanno

Heavenly Father, source of all that is holy, in every age you raise up men and women who live lives of heroic love and service. You have blessed your Church through the life of Vincent Capodanno, Vietnam War Navy chaplain, who had the “courage of a lion, and the faith of a martyr.1” He was killed in action offering medical assistance to the wounded and administering last rites to the dying on the battlefield. Through his prayer, his courage, his faith, and his pastoral care he is an example of laying down one’s life for one’s friends: Jesus told us that there is no greater love than this. If it be your will, may he be proclaimed a saint! We ask this through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

I gave "The Grunt Padre" five stars because I found it very inspirational and humbling to read about how one man can do so much if he offers it all up to God. Many people have questions about us Catholics that could be answered within the pages of this book. It is a book that you may read once but then keep going back to it for from its pages you can hear God talking to you. It is also a good news story. You just might learn why God lets things happen to good people. Much of the bad in this world happens because of the lack of love. Without love the ugly head of the evil one surface and we are left only with a vacuum and that is filled with strife, wars, hatred, envy, darkness, terrorism and all the rest of the bad things we see happening in this world. But Father Vincent Capodanno went about spreading the good news of Our Lord wherever he happened to be. With God and his guidance we have salvation. I strongly recommend this book to all who want to read of what is possible with God. God bless you all.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. The bravery, dedication, and outright love this man had for " His Marines" is overwhelming. If we could all be like this man the world would indeed be a much better place. I am so grateful that God chose this padre to serve. What a fantastic book and and man!!

Celebrates humanity's irrepressible capacity for creativity

"The Art of Life" is another insightful book by master philosopher and sociologist Zygmunt Bauman. Those who have already read a few of the octogenarian author's brilliant Liquid Modern series of books such as Liquid Life and Liquid Times or the more recent Consuming Life will be familiar with some of the postmodern themes embedded in "The Art of Life"; nevertheless, Mr. Bauman remains essential reading for anyone who wishes to gain a more sophisticated understanding of contemporary society. Here, the author ponders the meaning of the pursuit of happiness in the context of our increasingly dysfunctional consumerist society. The book couldn't be more timely, as Mr. Bauman succeeds yet again in skillfully deconstructing the psyche of the Western world and as recent financial turmoil threatens to unravel the precarious social model of which we have recently grown far too accustomed.

Mr. Bauman surveys the idea of happiness throughout human history to find it to be an elusive idea. Mr. Bauman submits that most often, people judge their level of satisfaction through a comparison with others; in today's society, a never-ending game of one-upmanship is expressed through the pursuit and acquisition of money to acquire the status that comes from exclusivity. Mr. Bauman contends that the cult of individualism and materialism throws the middle class into a perpetual state of anxiety and robs society of its ability to solve its problems. Yet, the author finds hope by acknowledging that many people have been able to choose morality and compassion in times of extraordinary stress, citing those who helped Jews to survive in the midst of the Holocaust as a prime example. Mr. Bauman believes that individuals may yet be able to collectively dedicate their lives and society to that which is ethical; this is not unlike the artist who aspires to creating beauty and meaning in a sometimes ugly and chaotic world.

It is also worth noting the cover art by Ursus Wehrli, whose graphic is inspired by the iconic image of a middle class businessman made famous by Renee Magritte. The image is multiplied many times over from large to small, suggesting a mass society in which individuals are indistinguishable save for their ability to consume and symbolically grow larger in stature and importance than others. The concept is a perfect complement to help illustrate the book's thoughtful and provocative themes, and commendable for its function as an original piece of art in a book that celebrates humanity's irrepressible capacity for creativity.

I highly recommend this discerning, intelligent and humane book to everyone.

The Art of Life

Zygmunt Bauman is best known for his thesis of Liquid Modernity. In this book moves beyond the purely sociological to offer more of a philosophical take and addresses the question of identifying meaning in our lives.

Bauman's argument centres around the question of happiness being the leitmotif of modern life and in the process presents a very good, if somewhat repetitious, account of capitalism's reliance on manufacturing desire. To quote the US declaration of Independence (which Bauman does not) life for many is about the pursuit of happiness. However, as the happiness of materialism is illusory - and hence modern life is a pursuit in which the target is never obtained. Happiness, or rather the pursuit of happiness, paradoxically (so the logic goes) constitutes a limit on the pursuance of life and in particular liberty. To be beholden to the golden calf that you hope is just around the corner is a very perverse kind of freedom.

Given that happiness does not work the remainder of Bauman's work addresses what, given the constraints of the liquid modern we are to do. In a survey of key philosophers, notably Sartre and Nietzsche, Bauman suggests we are all responsible for our own life trajectories even if that is a submission to the larger forces. The liquid modern idea is one that I find persuasive but extremely depressing - I suspect Bauman has something of a similar response. He is careful to offer an optimistic refrain - the illusion of happiness may be influential but it is not determinative, choices can still be made but these choices are hard and counter-intuitive (for the pursuit of happiness is all-embracing), but nevertheless even a choice to enter the unknown is still a choice, and that's not nothing.

About the Author

Paul D. Allison, Ph.D., is Professor of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania where he teaches graduate courses in methods and statistics. He is also the founder and president of Statistical Horizons LLC which offers short courses on a wide variety of statistical topics.

After completing his doctorate in sociology at the University of Wisconsin, he did postdoctoral study in statistics at the University of Chicago and the University of Pennsylvania. He has published eight books and more than 60 articles on topics that include linear regression, log-linear analysis, logistic regression, structural equation models, inequality measures, missing data, and survival analysis.

Much of his early research focused on career patterns of academic scientists. At present, his principal research is on methods for analyzing longitudinal data, especially those for determining the causes and consequences of events, and on methods for handling missing data.

A former Guggenheim Fellow, Allison received the 2001 Lazarsfeld Award for distinguished contributions to sociological methodology. In 2010 he was named a Fellow of the American Statistical Association. He is also a two-time winner of the American Statistical Association’s award for “Excellence in Continuing Education.”

Good explanations; Very little practice problems.

This book provides a good conceptual explanation of regression. Mind you, it is still very dry, but that's the nature of the subject matter.

The book, unfortunately, uses minimal examples to explain regression and has little to no practice problems. As with all mathematical subjects, I believe the key to understanding is practice and application of the mathematical principles to problems. In that regard, the book left much wanting.

To be fair, the author uses few key examples to explain and apply regression principles. But I felt there needed to be much more.

This is a paperback and a short book. It is rather skimpy. For that, I felt the price of the book was rather high. But then again, books on regression analysis aren't exactly best-sellers and I suppose the price needs to be high to make-up for the lack of demand. Still, I can't say the book was worth the price.

If you want to understand regression better, then this is a worthwhile book. If you want to supplement your good understanding of regression, then I recommend this book. If you want a book that will allow you to understand AND learn regression through practice problems, then look elsewhere.

Good introduction to regression
By not a natural
This easy-to-understand text is useful as preliminary or ancillary reading in a first course in regression analysis. For students having trouble with Gujarati, Wooldridge, Chatterjee and Hadi, or other standard introductory texts, the material contained in this brief account will almost certainly be helpful.

Allison's text provides the sort of overview that enables students to place detailed treatments of specific topics in a coherent context. This helps them understand just what they are trying to accomplish with all the tests, correctives, and relatively advanced analytical procedures that make up the bulk of usual textbooks on this widely used and increasingly technical topic.

The underlying logic of regression analysis can be understood by readers who lack what is sometimes referred to as mathematical maturity. This is especially pertinent with regard to multiple regression and the crucial issue of statistical control. The author does a fine job of making this about as clear as it can be.

good buy

I hesitated when I saw "undergraduate" since it is actually listed as a textbook in my graduate class. I ended up buying anyway, and I really like it! For me, the first half is a quick over view and the second half is a nice summary of what I have learned before and quick making-up of something I was not aware of. After all, I would say it is a keeper.
