Outdated in the 21st century

Rachel's book is considered by many to be an "essential read" but I believe that's simply due to the fact that it's old. Had it been published today, I don't think it would have established the same reputation. That's not to say that the book is bad, but Rachel writes from an extremely biased point of view and often cites opinions or beliefs as facts. Today's tarot authors (in my opinion) are less preachy and more open-minded. I do not know the author and have not read anything else by her, but judging by this single book, I would guess she had a lot of insecurities about being a female at the time of publication. I suppose on some level this is understandable, given the feminist movements and more prominent social inequalities of the time. But it's very unfortunate because the countless "girl-power" comments scattered throughout the book detract from the reading experience today. Furthermore, Rachel seems to have a very misguided view of women's places in history. As a historian and former teacher, I want to take a red marker and cross out many of the sentences or "facts" which she presents. It's not all wrong, but sadly her history studies are either incomplete or completely based in myth. I didn't get this book for divinatory card meanings, but had I needed this book for card definitions, it would have gotten 1 less star because Rachel's meanings are severely lacking.
The other major distraction is the spelling/grammatical errors. These are very frequent. As a re-publishing, it's inexcusable given the amount of time which could have been devoted to fixing such mistakes. One more star was lost for these.
Now finally, for the pros: Rachel seems well versed in Tarot practice, card attributions, and symbology. She is full of information about each card and I learned a lot of really interesting facts about Waite, Crowley, and the symbols on their cards which I didn't know before (and some of which are not mentioned in companion books). Her history of medieval tarot is also top-notch (unlike her ancient history) and worth reading. If she were to re-write this volume, omitting the historical inaccuracies and fixing the spelling/grammar issues, this would be a 5 star book.
Despite its flaws, I will not be selling the book because I feel it warrants a re-read in several years (once all of those little-known facts are forgotten.) But writing in a time when the market is flooded by tarot books, I'm afraid this one simply doesn't stand out any more.

Finally mastered some bravery to side with bad reviews:)

Unfortunately, I have to side with bad reviews which are surprisingly very few. I wasn't impressed by this book at all. She gives detailed descriptions of what you see on the card, like "there is water flowing under his thrown" but is very vague at explaining HOW to interpret it in a reading. Lots of references to different cultures/religions/eras makes it hard to get through. If you want to read this book to get a different prospective on Tarot it might be informational but it's not very handy when you just want a quick reference on a card meaning.

Meaning-Rich Exploration of the Tarot Cards

In-depth, thoughtful, book on Tarot. Well-written and scholarly. The title is apt, because Pollack wrings every DROP of wisdom from each of the cards, presenting you with myriad possibilities and points of view. Yet she never takes an authoritative, know-it-all tone. This book is a presentation of relevant information and beliefs that you must choose to integrate into your understanding of the cards (or push aside for now).
What this book does well is bring to light a fascinating array of connections and valid ideas about Tarot in general, and specifically suit by suit, card by card. Rather than tell you what interpretation is "right," 78 Degrees presents what most occultists have considered correct--in addition to the intuition they tapped for each individual reading. Pollack recognizes that Tarot is a living, evolving occult practice which requires an intelligent system of meaning as well as an intuitive, experienced reader.
BUY IT. Definitely worth it.
